I'm taking over a new Intermediate class next term and want to start doing a song with a gap fill exercise or similar every week. I was wondering if anyone had any favourites for using in class, songs which work well at this level, have easily audible/comprehensible lyrics and aren't full of bad language? I barely listen to English music, so I'm pretty clueless about what to use.

"Don't Cry" by Guns 'n Roses always goes down well with the Italian teenagers I teach. There's loads to talk about with it too....vocab on love, breaking up etc. You can even use it to talk about colloquial language....I can't get enough of that song!!

"One" by U2 is great for a talk about love again and Berlin Wall amongst other things....loads of stuff

"The Wild Rover" works well if you have an Irish cultural angle going on in your class....it works really well if the class are outgoing and not easily embarrassed if you organise them into two singing teams to learn the words and choreograph something simple to be judged by you or someone neutral.

Anything current in the charts works well once it fulfils your language criteria because it shows to the class that you're willing to do a bit of work on their behalf and not just copy old stuff.

I have a load of other songs that I typed with the gaps left in them on a usb stick. I can e-mail them if you want.

you really should register yourself at www.eslprintables.com

It's a fantastic website where you can browse loads of ESL worksheets and there are hundreds of pre-made worksheets based on songs/lyrics.

You must upload some worksheets of your own, which will have to be downloaded by other members. Each time someone downloads your worksheet, you gain a point, which can be spent on a worksheet of your choice,

Once you gain 30 points, you get 30 free downloads a day - keeps the site working nicely.

I know it may sound like a bit of an effort, but it is totally worth it.

Wss are created by all nationalities with all levels of English so it can sometimes be necessary to proof read worksheets, but there is an amazing amount of work that goes into most of the worksheets on the site!

If I had a million dollars - Barenaked Ladies. Good for second conditional. There is a good Youtube video that is specifically for EFL students.
