I got a bit of money for christmas and decided to go buy myself a squat rack as combined with the bench I bought last year I figured I could start on the Starting Strength program from home (gym membership expired november, also recessio recession etc).

Im looking at this one from Irish lifting: Light squat Rack

The problem is I currently only have a standard 5ft bar and about 50kg of standard york iron weights. So would I be better off saving for something like the Irish lifting 140kg olympic set, or just buying a 7ft standard bar and more standard weights? More standard weights would obviously be cheaper so what I really want to know is if theres any major advantage olympic has over standard.

    Cheers

Bump, I'm proabably gonna drop up to Irish-Lifting tomorrow (hopefully they're open). At the moment I'm kinda leaning towards getting the olympic set as well as the squat rack... as a long term investment like. No way I'm gonna be able to afford a power rack/cage any time soon but with a squat rack and olympic set along with the pull up bar and bench i already have I should have pretty much everything covered I think? Any help/advice on the most economical and sensible thing to do would be much appreciated, cheers

I don't think they are open, Mickk who owns it was on saying he is back from China soon. You can get squat stands that are not connected so would suit your 5ft bar.

i know the ones your on about but I dont think theyre safe really to use without a spotter, I was looking for more a rack i could do squats at home in til failure no bother without a spotter

bought the 140kg olympic set of weights for 300 after... didn't mind paying the extra tenner, saved me a trip up to dublin or getting it posted down from Irish Lifting, I still need a squat rack though - anyone know the best option for buying a rack i can use at home on my own safely? (ie has proper spotter catchers included?) there must be a cheaper option than a power cage that I dont really need.

    cheers
