    Hi guys,
Im just wondering have I missed the applications to correct Junior Cert and Leaving Cert exam papers for the summer, say in English and History.
Its my first year teaching, and so Ive also been told that I have to correct my own mock papers from my classes, does anyone know, do you get paid for this, or what is the craic with correcting the mocks?

    Thanks a mill,

I think applications for the JC/LC corrections had to be in for December 18th but they might accept late applications. Check www.examinations.ie under Recruitment. With English and History I'd imagine there are a good few people willing to correct so you might be lucky to get it.

As for the mocks, if you are correcting them yourself then I'd imagine you wont be paid for it. In my school we send the corrections away and each student pays for this. We collect the money and send it to the companies or to the person we have chosen to correct it. Unless you have been instructed to collect money then I'd imagine you wont get paid for.

Seeing as you're correcting your own mocks why not apply to whichever company is supplying your papers to correct mocks from other schools - you'll have a bit of a handle on the marking scheme by the time your own are corrected (and the first few are always the most time consuming). Money is poor but at least it'll be a few quid if you don't have any luck getting summer corrections.

I was talking to someone the other day who applied to Dublin Examinations Board as a corrector and was turned down on the basis that they did not have two years experience as a teacher. At one level this is nuts as the person is teaching Leaving Cert, and if they are considered sufficiently 'experienced' to do that you'd wonder what the big problem with correcting mocks would be, especially given that they presumably would get some guidance on the marking.

Of course, it is fair to presume that these jobs are over-subscribed by applicants as that's generally the case when people start quoting the 'experience' clause to you. If they needed people they would be happy to overlook the lack of experience in the same way that if the school would happily have pointed to this girl's lack of experience had they another available option to teach that class.

The point I would make to you is that you can expect to have your relative lack of experience held against you.

On the question of correcting your own mocks - is it not just the case that the school has decided not to send them away to be corrected and as such does not expect that correctors will be paid?

Anybody know if it's still possible to apply to supervise the JC and LC exams?

There doesn't appear to be anything about it here: http://www.examinations.ie/index.php?l=en&mc=re&sc=ei

The closing date for supervision was back at the start of December I think, but it's always worth throwing your name in, to allow for drop-outs, illness etc.
