Wheres the best place to find one of these? Seen some advertised in carzone and what not, thought a garage buys them after they're finished with them.

    Any ideas?

Sold in the Dublin auctions, have seen them in both Wilson's and Merlin.

I see a trend with some people on Carzone advertising them as "state cars" when they actually mean Garda cars. I suppose they think it sounds better.

But why would you bother with one of these ? Yes they are cheap, but usually dog rough and high mileage (well over 100k typically). Usually need respray to cover over aerial holes, signwriting damage, extra lights, etc. Also interior damage ... dash, headlining etc. For the white ones at least you can tell forever more that they were ex garda cars => zero resale value.

The only good point is a fresh reg for small money.

His reasoning, it will be used as a PSV and it needs to be up the years a fair bit, with the new regulations being brought in by the Taxi Reg. Alot of it is cosmetic anyway only real worry is the mecanicals of the car.

Fair point. Resale would be poor after PSV use anyway, and white car would be good for signwriting if you were to go that route. Had been toying with the idea of putting a taxi on the road, hadn't considered this option. Was thinking along the lines of a 04 or so Hyundai Sonata or Kia Magentis petrol auto with leather ... cheap to buy, auto for traffic driving, leather for easy clean. But now you have me thinking again !

New taxi regs require cars first used as a taxi must not be more than 3 yrs old.

It's currently a proposal, not a rule Colm. But it's coming in alright.

Poor taxi drivers. there is nothing wrong with a car that has passed a yearly DOE. I've been driven an a Mercedes W124 beige taxi in Cologne / Kóln that had about 900,000kms on her and she was grand.

I took the word "new" to mean just in as opposed to not in yet.

That's how I would understand it too.

The problem is well kept older ones are the minority. Theres way too many barely keeping old ****boxes running with what they can just about get away with. The needs (laziness/ lack of caring ) of the many outway that of the few.

I've been driven aroudn in many older Mercs while abroad but every one of them was really well kept.
