    hi all,

recently i've been unable to write to dvd disks ( different dvd manufacturers tried ) I keep getting media errors , however writing to cd's are done without issue.

I have tried cleaning the unit ( using cleaning disk) without success. I recently purchased a super-drive for a mac air-book thinking it would work externally but its not seen on the mac but oddly its seen on a laptop but not usable. Apparently apple designed it to work only with the air-book :-C.

is there anything else i can try before i remove the drive from the external case and install in into my mac mini ( read on the web that ths can be done , but please correct me if i'am wrong ) ???

here's the details of the internal super-drive

    MAT****A DVD-R UJ-846:

    Firmware Revision: FM3J
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

    regards

    brendan

    Try reseting the PRAM:

Is the Macbook still in warranty?

Also, are you running Snow Leopard - lots of people reporting superdrive problems since upgrading. It is unclear whether SL is actually the cause though. Superdrives seem to fail a lot anyway.

I haven't been able to burn DVD's for over a year now.

I got me a LG Slim external burner(LG GSA-E50L Slim 8x DVD±RW DL USB 2.0 Powered External Drive LightScribe) in PC world. Works flawlessly.

    A possible alternative.

    hi all,

thanks for all your help, just to clarify that its a mac mini and I bought the external superdrive ( for a mac book ) thinking it would work on the usb
( going up for sale so if any one wants to make me an offer please do in excess of say 50e ).

I have tried cleaning the laser ( using a dvd disk cleaner ) and using compressed air ( in a tin ) to clear it out.

Think I will just go with John_longs idea and get me and external drive.

    thanks again

    brendan
