Myself and 3 mates are planning to join a course in the next month or so.

We were looking at joining Portmarnock Links but I have heard that you can lease membership from Carton House.

Does anyone have any more details on this?

If i had to pick one (or more importantly if I had the money!) I'd pick Carton House. 2 cracking courses. I know you'll have people saying... ah but you can play Portmarnock all year round but when for example Carton is closed due to weather I bet its blowing a gale and just as horrible around Portmarnock just a lot dryer cause its a links. So in any case you wouldn't even want to go out and play if you get me.

Its €2,500 to lease a share and you get free golf Mon-Fri in Mount Juliet & Fota Island, nice perk, (you mustn't be able to enter competitions there). Not sure how many of those lease shares are left but i would bet my life if you turned up with €2,500 in your hand they'd happily do business.
