Anyone else notice this about SKY HD

I got Sky HD a few months ago only to get Sky + as it was probably the cheapest way. At least I have Sky HD for a year (I moght cancel it then).
But I dont have movies or sports so I hardly ever look at it.

My problem is this, and maybe I am losing it but I dont think so...(!)

I imagine my Sky picture on the OLD sky box was sharper and clearer than on the Sky HD box!!! Now, Im not talking about the HD picture, that is very good (although whay are some channels not full screen size...?).

But I am comparing my regular channels (non hd) on the Sky HD box with how they appeared on the Sky (old) box. The picture on the old box was sharper, or something, I cant describe it.

On the new box it seems to be softer, with richer (too rich) colour! I know I can adjust the tv but then that will change the HD picture also. I hope I am describing this correctly. The pictures quality rank in this order

    1 Sky HD

2 Sky on old box, or, I forgot to mention(!) on Sky HD box BUT THROUGH AV not HDMI.

3 Regular channels HD box (hdmi)

I asked a dealer I met in a shopping centre he thinks it might be the hdmi cable quality.....? But its fine for the HD picture. Any one elso notice it or any solutions?

Certainly I would prefer my "old " Sky picture. Cant see SKY coming out to give me a new HDMI cable.....

    That's bullcrap!
Hdmi cables use a digital signal, so the quality is either going to be 100% or 0%. Unless there is any physical damage to the cable, it's not at fault.
You can get hdmi cables on amazon.co.uk for less than €15 delivered, that are just as good as a Monster brand one's for over €100.

Hdmi cables do seem to have a softer image quality using SD content than scart, but I wouldn't say that the overall PQ is worse.
As I don't have Sky+HD myself it's hard to say.

I certainly agree with you with regards to the SD channels. They look better on my old Sky+ box.

Salesman who said that about the HDMI cables is talking out his arse.

Mossy Im glad Im not imagining things!

Yes, softer is the word, almost cinema like. But thats not what I like! Mind you its only the SD channels, the HD ones have the sharpness. So maybe HDMI cable generally just isnt good enough!(Strange)

I wonder if anyone used a HDMI lead on the regular Sky+ box and is it the same?

It honestly looks like a step backways despite our advancing technology.
It looks like we'll have to put up with it so until every channel is HD. Or I might cancel HD after the year (will lose the new epg then also!)

Strange people havent made more of a fuss about this here. Maybe they didnt notice it.

    No hdmi on sky +
you wont lose the new epg. I have it and dont sub to HD.

You really need a €100 hdmi lead ! NOT. :D

as said before it will work or it wont. !

I do notice the picture quality but its on channels like Eden where the pixelation drives me nuts..

have you tried switching between PAL and RGB in the HD box picture settings?

I just got the hd in today and it looks fantastic, but when i'm viewing through the HDMI channel on my tv(as opposed to the normal scart channel), the aspect ratio doesn't automatically change, it just stays on 16:9 widscreen. When watching through the normal scart it automatically switches between 4:3 and 16:9. This is the only annoyance so far, oh and the autoview feature is missing.
