The rumour is that it is replacing the HSS on the Dun Laoghaire-Holyhead route.

Stena Lynx is rumored to be taking up Dun Laoghaire - Holyhead until Stena Carisma (a smaller HSS, currently operating between Frederikshavn and Göteborg) is free in the Summer.

What is the difference in capacity between the current HSS and the Lynx? Will a reduced capacity result in higher fares?

HSS Stena Explorer : 1500 passengers, 375 Cars
Stena Lynx III : 660 passengers, 153 cars

The only reason Stena are replacing the Explorer is the huge cost of fuel required to operate so I don't see fare increases as a result of replacement.

One of the 3 HSS crafts has been sold to Venezuela (one of the few places where fuel costs are not such a large concern at present) and there are persistent rumours that a second will be heading there soon leaving the HSS Stena Voyager on Belfast-Stranraer.

As of now there has been no official announcement as to what plans they have for the Lynx III or the DunLaoghaire route although it seems certain that the final sailing of the HSS Explorer will be on Jan 05 2010. So far there are no bookable sailings to/from Dun Laoghaire after this date.

As previously stated replacement with the Lynx III and possibly the Stena Carisma is the most likely scenario and the good news with that is it would most likely mean an increase in sailings from the skeleton single daily service the HSS was reduced to in recent years.

The 5th of Jan end is standard thoug as its usually withdrawn for maintenance for a couple of weeks around then iirc.

Even though the Lynx will be smaller I can't really see Stena running more services, maybe 2 a day but the fact is the HSS is rarely full these days anyway
