After a week without a run around town due to the ice, I took a run around Oldbridge Estate today and can't recommend it enough. Plenty of trails over grass and a nice run down by the canal (some ice in places but can run on the grass verge).

Is the Ras held there? Didn't know that. I used run in the Ras years ago as a juvenille when it was held down in Dunleer (hard to beat the snow in bare feet!). I believe Dunleer A.C. train there from time to time.

That's good to know. I'm new to running and have been training on Bellewstown racecourse and on the roads around there but can't at the moment due to so much ice. I can't even get there! Haven't run for a week and I'm feeling the pressure.

I was in the same position myself. I'm new to running myself (my juvenille Ras years seem like another lifetime) and was great to get back out after a week. I can only imagine how bad the roads are out around bellewstown! If you are heading out to Oldbridge, take the Drogheda-Slane road and go across the Obleisk/Iron Bridge as looks like the road has been gritted as far as the centre.

Thanks for that but first I have to get down the hill between Duleek and Bellewstown and with 2 inch thick ice and no sign of a thaw I won't be driving on that for a while. But I certainly look forward to trying out the paths around Oldbridge estate some time, ah...soon. I heard there is going to be a race, is it a 10k or half marathon, in early summer, perhaps the June bank holiday week-end. Any more info?

Wasn't aware of it but a quick google showed up this..

Superb! Just 5 minutes from home - I'd assume from Oldbridge under the new bridge then along the ramparts into town. One to look forward to. Bit of a thaw on tonight so you might get down that hill!!

That's the one! I entered for the 5k in the Phoenix Park on Friday, Jan 1st. That will be my first race! I've come to running through walking, having done a marathon a year for the last 3 years. Really enjoying the challenge and watching my distance gradually lengthen. 10k by early May looks a real possibility!

Rás na hÉireann was held there in February 2009. There may also be a charity 10k in May.

There was a 10km walk held there in September, ask the staff and they'll show you the route. Place gets plenty of joggers/runners, and there's a MTB club which starts its spins from the car park there on Sunday mornings.

Good stuff. Good one to aim for and hopefully I'll see you there!

Yes, my racing début is cancelled! Heard it first on the radio as I was heading to Bellewstown for my first run in over a week. Oh well, I'll keep up the running and hopefully try for a 10k around Paddy's Day.

You could also consider doing the Raheny 5 at the end of January or the Cupid's Dash 10k in February. :)

It's on a side road off the main Drogheda-Slane road. Around 1 mile the Slane side of the roundabout over the M1, it's the road that takes you across the Iron Bridge/Obliesk. After around half a mile, this road turns sharply across another small bridge and the entrance is on the right immediately across the bridge.

Sorry about the rubbish directions, here it is on Google Maps

Back to work so my daylight hours run around Oldbridge is gone. Anyone been runnng around Drogheda over Christmas? Any suggestions for routes that are relatively ice-free (grass verges etc.).

Howdy, I included Oldbridge in my marathon training as part of a loop from the town park out to Oldbridge and back around the other side of the river ( a very tough run imho ) but I only included the entrance and exit roads to the car park and back. Is their a good grass loop there too? What kind of lap distance can you get? I know there is a big field there but I wasn't sure if it was okay to run on it or not!

with the current underfoot conditions in Drogheda I could only suggest the treadmill or perhaps one of the nearby beaches if the roads are safe enough to get to one, I usually start in Seapoint beach and run to Clogerhead beach and back, its around 7.2K.

I've been running in the gym only myself over the last week or two.

    Hi there,

You must be running mainly on roads then?

I had a 5km loop out at Oldbridge that has been grand to run - down by the canal is a bit icy and rough underfoot in places but it's quite an enjoyable run.

You can see a map here.. http://www.mapmyrun.com/run/ireland/tulaigh-%c1lainn/581126253280196118

Nice route, must give it a lash some day. The only dodgy bit is the stretch on the road under the new bridge, I hate that piece of road for some reason. I love that run down on the ramparts and it's one I use quite often.

It's perfectly fine to run on the fields there. There's something like 10; some are rented out by farmers, others are not.
