Following in from the popularity of the "Can you really say you're ok with gays?" thread we ask "Can you really say you're ok with Transssexuals?"

Can you accept that someone is now a man even though they were once a woman or vice versa? Do you think that the public are more accepting of a female changed into a male or a male changed into a male?

There was a thread similiar to this a while before. TBH, I'd be more worried about coming onto a transsex woman (as in, a man who became a woman). Hence why I'm never ever gonig to Thailand. Or atleast if I do go I'll avoid all the "women".

EDIT: You left out the "I'm not okay with them" option in the poll. :-/

Honestly, I think it's weird, but that's just my opinion.

    Nope

Yes, completely okay with it. I have a friend who was a Michael and is now Suzanne. xD

And yeah, generally people tend to be more okay with girls being boy-ish as opposed to boys being girl-ish. From what I've seen anyway.

As long as they don't ask me to join them in clothes swapping (which I know they won't), I don't have a problem.

In my experience, all they're looking for is attention. If they don't flaunt themselves about, then I have no problems. It's the same argument as the gay pride parades from the original thread

    No, I find it disgusting.

    Bigoted? Tough.

    Wasn't there a T/S on here before?

Am I being thick or is there no 'No' option in the poll?

I think it must be awful for someone to be stuck in the wrong body. I think it must be so hard to take the step to change your sex. I would never judge anyone for doing this - however - I must be honest and say that I could never be in a relationship with a man who used to be a woman. But they can happily be my best friend.

Isn't it funny how you can hate T/S yet not be ridiculed and if you hate gays you would nearly be taken out and shot.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,488 ✭✭✭pikachucheeks

    I'm fine with them.

Everyone's different and chooses to live their life a different way.

I wouldn't want people to judge me, so I don't judge them.

    Each to their own!

Not something I either understand or accept tbh.
I wouldn't dislike someone over it ,I just don't believe in it.

Political Correctness (I hate that phrase) seems to dictate which groups one is allowed to oppose.
Myself, I admitted in the gay thread I'm not comfortable with gay people; I was one of a small handful, I'm sure people who felt that way were less willing to be completely honest for fear of seeming homophobic.

Life is far far too short to stay in a gender you don't feel you belong in.

I've got no idea why this would bother anybody.

I have seen the photos from the 'Beers' ..so I would have no problem guessing that there are quite a few posters that look like they would be VERY 'okay' with Transexuals ;)

They freak me out. I don't care if that's not PC.. either you're a man or a woman, gay or straight

you're not a man that was supposed to be a woman, you're a man that was supposed to be a man, that think's you should be a woman

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,739 ✭✭✭✭minidazzler

I have dressed as a woman, so I would have to say, no I have no problem whatsoever with them.

People who go for Gender realignment, it's weird and all, but I have no problem with it, there are people who literally feel they were born in the wrong gendered body.

That said, Kids should not be allowed do this sort of thing as has happened recently.

    I'd agree with this.

I'm not sure why, but right now, not knowing any male - female transsexuals personally, I find the whole idea of dating one ... a bit strange.
Most likely because it's such a taboo area of life and it's not common practice.

I'd rather date someone who'd always been a man... Not that I'm saying transsexuals aren't proper men / women.

There was a documentary on TV3 recently at about 4am. Part of the BBC Horizon series. It was titled "The Boy who waschanged into a Girl". Born a boy, botched circumcision, no dick left on him, between his legs looked like a girl, had the surgery at 3 months, mother thought it was best as did the surgeon.

He was a twin. He grew up as a fatter, female version of his identical brother. They found him 30 years later. He now had a beard and had surgery to get his balls back. He lives with his wife and her kids. He is now looking in an anorexic state and is very unhappy at how he was handled. He would rather slit his throat than go back to the days when he was a girl.

Also, from the comments so far ..people seem to confusing:

    Transexuals & Transvestites.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,134 ✭✭✭Duddy

No probs with them, in fairness, if you're a twat you're a twat, and it doesn't really matter who ya have sex with or who/what you were a year ago. That's as much as you need to have a basis for friendship. I don't think/care about about the inner-most feelings or secrets of other friends, so I don't see why someone should be affronted if they meet a trans person!

That's a different situation though, he didn't become a woman out of choice, but rather his mother made him into a woman because she thought it would be better. If a man or woman chooses to dress up as the other sex/get a sex change, why look down upon them for it? I don't agree with women smothering themselves with fake tan every night but I don't look down upon them for it. They think it looks better, it makes them feel better, it's the same for transsexuals. Each to their own.

    Just thinking the same

    Bloody hell they are long.

So do I say lucky bit*h or lucky bast*rd...

I don't know any transexuals so I can't really judge.
Some of the ones on the documentaries really look like they have some serious messed up mental problems. Which I think need to be addressed first in their lives before they go for the chop/surgery stuff.

I would have my reservations about them, could never go out with one as I would be rather creeped out. I am sure I could become great friends with them, but there would still be "something about them" I would find strange.

I understand that brain scans have proven that some peoples brains do infact act like the opposite gender, but none the less I find it just as unnatural as anything else.

In saying that, I do find plastic surgery of any sort (baring reconstruction) as unnatural too but to a lesser extent, though I wouldnt be as freaked out as I would by a transsexual. I just worry about the persons insecurities.

Perhaps people remember the show, "Theres something about Merriam", the amount of compliants about that show showed that there is still a "fear" of transexuals. If I recall correctly they all sued her/him for defamation of character or a similar charge.

Honestly, I find it a bit strange, but I don't know what it's like to feel you have the wrong body and so I shouldn't judge anyone who gets a sex change. I don't know any TS people myself but I would have no problem whatsoever being friends with one.

Theres a big difference between gender and sex. Gender is how we act, sex is biological surely if someone things themselves a woman can they not just act how they want, how does their biology stop them from this. Gender is just one being theatrical show we all take part in day in day out. I have no idea why transsexuals have to go the whole nine yards- can't they just act like women ?
