one negative is the tn type display, reduces colour performance a bit, but that what helps bring the price down

Pity it's TN, not going from IPS to it even though I want an upgrade!

As a possible alternative, what do you reckon about this for GB£121.73 (€136) delivered? 1920x1080 resolution and DVI. It seems to get fairly good reviews, but Digimate isn't what you'd call a top brand.

Any good deals (under €200) for IPS panels?

Wish I knew! I spent €480 for my 20.5" monitor 2 years ago. Well worth it though :)

No HDCP means a 1/10 if you ever plan to watch a BD movie or play a newish game on anything other than VGA.

What? It has HDMI, what does HDCP have to do with playing a newish game?

I only see VGA and DVI mentioned in the specs. This is Peckerhead's Ebuyer link btw.

Oops, I actually meant to say DVI.

I still don't see the problem with lack of HDCP and new games?

(DVI is basically the same as HDMI, only it doesn't carry audio and uses a different jack)

You'd be lucky to find an IPS panel shipping to Ireland for less than €400... here's (i think) a Dell 22" widescreen e-IPS:

    price €423

I've seen a game or two saying it needed HDCP.
Maybe I dreamt/had a nightmare about it... dunno.

HDCP is needed in connecting digital to digital, it was supposed to make sure everything works fine, but it can be a pain if one (device) doesn't have HDCP, and the other does.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,056 ✭✭✭Tragedy

HDCP is nothing to do with making things work.
Also, some DVI devices can support HDCP.

But as I said, it has nothing to do with gaming - it's more to do with movies and tv.

I bought this monitor (the Dell ST2410) last week and I must say it is a very fine panel. It has VGA, DVI and HDMI connectors, also audio passthru and a place to add a soundbar. I recommend the AS500 from Ebay, best of the Dell soundbars.

The screen is crisp and well-calibrated from the go, though there are plenty of options in the menu to calibrate it yourself if you choose.

    Looks like a massive buy!!!!
As for the soundbar, if you've got any contacts in the US, check this out.....

This looks like a bargin. Would this is good for playing Xbox 360 on? Thats basically what I would be getting a HD TV or monitor for.

I have a similar Dell monitor connected to my 360 via HDMI and it's perfect.

In that case, Mr Dell, I sink ve kan do business, yes?

I deserve a nice easy online purchase after all that queuing up outside Aldi last week... :pac:

I am very tempted by this, have been waiting to buy a 24" with HDMI for a while.

I have looked at the description and cant find this. Can anyone tell me if the response time is 5ms G2G? Some posters were saying that they are going to buy this for gaming, but surely 5ms isn;t ideal, or is that a load or marketing crap by the 2ms pushers and 5ms is actually fine?

    Also after picking one up.
    Thanks OP!

The Dell 2209WA is available a good bit cheaper from a lot of the UK e-tailers:
    http://www.google.co.uk/products?q=2209wa

It has an e-IPS panel (cheaper IPS, but still a lot better then TN IMO).
I bought it for 200 sterling before christmas, but it seems to have gone up in price over the last while. Its a lovely monitor, the only downside that I have found is the fact that the backlight is very bright.
There is piles of info on it across the web, in particular a ch (with a huge thread on the hardcop forus about it (couldnt find it with a quick google but it's there)

Forgive my ignorance could you connect a UPC box to this.

Like does it have a scart connection the UPC box has the tuner so should just output the picture

Yup, as I said it has gone up in price since I bought it. can be got for approx 250euros delivered though, which is a lot better then dell's 400 euros.

    linky

Saw this on Dabs earlier. Its 5ms as some people were talking about earlier for the gaming

BenQ 24" G2420HD 5ms DVI HDMI HD LCD TFT

    Max resolution of 1920 x 1080

Is this any good? Buying a new screen in preparation of a new build next month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

Yep, does the job, still have to go up to power city and get a hdmi cable for it though, then i'll have dual monitors, totally unnecessary, but I wouldn't have it any other way. :)

dell was the best all rounder....(still) image quality is excellent, with bright colours and fine contrast and detail. fast moving games were blur free and it was good with video too...more energy efficient than most rivals....excellent value for money

This arrived late on Friday so had it for the weekend after all.

Its excellent. Playing an Xbox on HD is a whole different experiece. Thanks OP for the tip!

Just took mine out of the box. It only comes with the standard VGA lead, so I'll need to pick up a HDMI cable.

If I want to switch input easily between the Xbox and the PC, where should I look for one of those 3-way switchers?

As far as I know HDMI cables are normally sold seperaty. Don't go spending anything over €15 on one though. A cheap cable delivers the same picture quality as an expensive one, depite what some guy in PC World might say :D

Aldi had them i know the shop in castletroy Limerick still has about 15 left so i reckon a good root around the Aldi's might unearth one. Think they where 15 euro.

why so? and can you recommend a monitor for photo editing then?

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 10,686 Mod ✭✭✭✭melekalikimaka

The ST2410 is cheap compared to high end monitors of the same size because it is NOT a high end monitor. It uses a cheap TN type panel, which is not recommended for photo editing. The main problem with TN panels is the (very) small viewing angle, which causes you to see uneven lighting across the screen. Also, colors do not display the same way when viewed from a different angle. These characteristics are particularly undesirable when working with photos on a (fairly) large screen.

The DELL Ultrasharp U2410 would be a much better choice for photo editing, but I must admit that this is not a truly cheap monitor. It offers excellent value for money, though. A similarly good choice in the "midprice" range of monitors would be the HP LP2475W. Both these monitors have IPS type panels, which are generally considered to be the best choice for serious photo (and video) editing.

alot more. just a heads up bout the quality of the screens. I'm sure theres cheaper, it depends on what ya want the screen for, for games and movies i'd be all for this, photos, id steer clear

    Just checked. Its €664

Really not in the same league at all. Like comparing a Fiat Punto to a Merc. It seems to be that this is an excellent value entry level monitor.

large crt would be better quality, its a big poor quality screen, depends what your after

got one of these, definite issue with it being dark if you are looking at the screen from below - fine if you sit upright at a desk but a pain if you want to watch a film and you want to sink down in your sofa.
