I've been snooping around the IMDB, as one does, and came across this upcoming flick:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0446029/

I know nothing about the source material, i assume graphic novel conversion then?
Michael Cera and Shaun Of The Dead/Hott Fuzz director......will it be a "must see" ?

Having read some of the comics it's based on, it could be good. Not sure how they'll fil the more off the wall stuff into it though (things like
the teleport network or the streetfighter-tastic fight sequences
, but it might be good. The big potential issue is that thus far the story hasn't seemed like enough to justify a series of six books so hopefully they won't try and make this a series of six films.

As said, this could be good, but like most people who read the books, I'm concerned that Michael Cera is completely miscast as Scott; the lead character, Scott Pilgrim, is a dorky, geeky 20-something livewire who thinks he's cooler than he really is. A pillock, but a loveable nerdy one. Michael Cena just doesn't play those kind of characters - I can't see how he'll manage it.

I have complete faith in Edgar Wright though; having watched Spaced, Shaun O' the Dead & Hot Fuzz, I can see how his style of directing would translate the off-the-wall, energtic comic without too much problem. Though comic->live action translations don't exactly work most of the time. It's just the casting I can't get past the most.

Looks okay, nothing incredibly eye catching about it.

    That looks like good fun..

And as pixelburp said, I also have complete faith in Edgar Wright. This seems right up his alley!

Has an extremely talented cast of young actors / actresses too - Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzmann, Brandon Routh, Mae Whitman, Aubrey Plaza.

I blame the intro and end of the trailer for that. Just comes across as another wacky comedy.

    Oh and it spoils that
one of the evil exes is a woman
    .

    Indeed, I do have faith in Edgar Wright, and it certainly looks like it has the zip and energy of the comics. Wright knows how to pick works that suit his style. So on that note it could be a blast. Having said that, the trailer does go some way confirming my suspicions about Cena; he's just too wimpy & too much of a wet to be Scott;

Michael Cera as the lead has me worried :(

Just flicked through the first comic there last night; Scott is such a wild-eyed eejit. Physically, Cera's not right - his hang dog expression & demeanour just doesn't sit right. He always looks like he just got some mildly disappointing news.

And here's some FREE SCOTT PILGRIM for anyone else who wants to a look at the source material. ;)

    Possible spoilers but not really.

I had the same feeling when I read the comics. Its a shame his character couldnt come across better in the trailer though, he just seems like Michael Cera and not Scott Pilgrim. The slow-mo punch against Patel is pretty cool though.

In case you've never seen it..

Edgar Wright interviewing Michael Cera and Jonah Hill about 'Superbad':

    Hilarious! :D

I think it could be quite good. Trailer looks pretty impressive and I definitely have faith in Edgar Wright not to let something overly terrible get made, at least not with his name on it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,753 ✭✭✭fitz0

I have no doubt that the film will be well done under Edgar Wright's guiding hand except fot Michael Cera. He just isn't right for the part; his acting talents are not the most varied and he doesn't physically fit the part. I really really hope I'm wrong but I think he may just ruin the film.

The trailer shows too much but at the same time doesn't show enough of the tone of the comics (and I hope, the film)
Gideon shouldn't be shown, nor should the evil ex-girlfriend. Its too spoilerish to ruin the ex-gf surprise for people who haven't read the comics.

I'm guessing the ending will be different from the comics since the last one hasn't even been released yet. Or maybe Bryan Lee O'Malley shared the ending with the writers.

    New trailer y'all!

I've just finished the comics (and looking forward to part six) and this looks like a pleasantly loyal adaptation of it. Lots of nice little visual touches - check out Ramona ringing the doorbell - and definitely looks like it captures the spirit of the comics. Plus Scott is wearing a Plumtree t-shirt :) Looking forward to this now.

I still think Cera is all wrong for it, his voice is just too young or something. Other than that, it looks good, very good.

I'm not the biggest Cera fan either, but he seems okay to capture that constant sense of confusion and innocence that I'd associate with Scott. Still, he does have basically one performance, so would have been nice to see a slightly more unknown actor given the role. On the whole though, it's a fantastic cast - Alison Pill, Kieran Culkin, Anna Kendrick are some great choices for his friends, plus
    Jason Schwartzman as Gideon :)

Thanks for that - I watched it a couple of times this morning & even if my concerns about Cera remain (although he doesn't seem as wet as initially feared, he is capturing some of the goofy exuberance of Scott), the adaptation looks faithful and the movie itself lots of fun.

Also I do believe I have now completely fallen in love with Romana Flowers (otherwise known as Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Sooooo cute.

I also love all those little 8-bit gaming references: they're just so cool up there on the screen :D My inner geek is getting quite excited...

    Looks like great fun..

.. I do however think it's going to be ridiculed by the majority of the movie-going public - I can literally picture people grimacing at a lot of the gaming references - for example, the 1-Up scene.

And this is why we're best ignoring the general public :pac: You shouldn't trust anyone who doesn't get video game references :p

Oh absolutely, in fact never mind the general public, you can guarantee the majority of critics and reviewers will slate this movie.

They'll likely have never read the comics to begin with, but a popular insult critics like to use is to compare something as "like a video game", So an entire 90 minute love-letter to 80s gaming is just going to inspire a lot of bad reviews.

As long as somebody, somewhere is willing to take the chance on a moderately-known (but very talented) director adapting a moderately-known comic, the general public can do and say what they like. Trailer looks fantastic and very faithful to the comic.

I don't know about that, I think we should probably wait for the film to come out before we stick words in the mouths of critics and reviewers.

I'm not particularly comfortable about the line in bold as a complaint, because if a film is an adaptation of material from another medium, it should be judged as a standalone entity. It's no good saying "oh, that's explained in the comic" - nobody goes to the cinema (or their DVD supplier of choice) to get an incomplete story that is then finished off in another medium. So you can't criticise someone having a critical opinion of the film for being unfamiliar with the source material, because that should be irrelevant to enjoying the film.

Aside from which, a film that is "like a game" does not equate to a film that is a homage to gaming (be it 8-bit, 16-bit or whatever other generation you want). I'd imagine a film like Silent Hill or Hitman being "like a game", in that there were segments of it that didn't really make sense in the context of a film narrative, but would make sense in the context of a videogame. (Eg in Silent Hill, there were a couple of scenes that were very silly and simple puzzles that contributed nothing of substance to the overall story, but did echo the gameplay mechanic to some extent. Or in Hitman there was that preposterous scene where Olyphant's character is fighting three other Hitmen and suddenly pulls two katanas from underneath his fitted suit jacket - clearly a preposterous notion in itself, but also probably a nod to the silliness in the game where the player can carry a couple of dozen weapons without so much as a crease to the character's clothing on-screen).

Anyway, all of that is me being finicky and doesn't detract from the possibility of this being a decent film. It's actually a nice change to see that O'Malley has committed to one film adapting the whole series rather than trying to string out a series of films.

Pet peeve of mine too, I guess having read the books it isn't quite as obvious here, but they do give away a lot regarding who the exes are etc... A lot of the joy in Scott Pilgrim though are the little character details and humourous asides, so I'm sure the film will have a lot of surprises for anyone new to the series, and hopefully lots of sly references to geek culture.

Well that should be taken as given, but to me, reading it, Scott Pilgrim always seemed like a singular taste, not exactly something easily digestable for the general public. I don't mean that in an ivory-tower sense, just that it reads like something only a certain generation (or even sub-set of a generation) would "get". So I don't have faith professional critics will give it a fair appraisal (of course at the end of the day, it's what I think of the movie that should matter to me).

Well yes of course, but it ties in a little to what I'm saying in the above. It shouldn't be a precursor to watching a movie that you have read the book / comic / whatever, but I think there's a large element of context in the series that might get lost in translation. We'll see.

But hey, it's all academic because the movie itself might be a load of 'ol tosh anyway :)

Soundtrack listing. Sounds good to me, Beck writing the Sex Bob-omb Songs should be interesting. There's also a new international trailer at that link too, but I stopped watching after 20 seconds because it was giving even more away. And Kotaku report there'll be Zelda music on the soundtrack too.

Most importantly, it definitely has Plumtree's Scott Pilgrim, which was O'Malley's inspiration for the title :)

This is such a great story:

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ghsM6ANLar-ZrEEFZF1aWq9Mx3YAD9H4OILO0
At the end of Universal Pictures' "Scott Pilgrim" panel at the pop-culture convention Thursday, director Edgar Wright had a surprise for the crowd. He invited anyone handed a button marked with an 8-bit rendition of the title character's face at the start of the session to follow the filmmaker to a world premiere screening of the movie.

"Would you people like to follow me to the theater right now to watch the film?" he asked.

Wright stepped off the stage away from assembled cast members and quickly disappeared into a sea of more than 6,000 convention goers. Outside the San Diego Convention Center, masses of people split off into different directions, eventually converging seven blocks away on the historic Balboa Theatre for the comic adaptation debut.

I eagerly await the last book arriving from Amazon, the game and of course the film. Totally on a Scott Pilgrim buzz right now.

Not sure if this will be too good. Interested to see what Edgar Wright will do with it, but I tried reading the comics a good while back and found it to be utterly rubbish. He's a very unappealing character.

I entered this, as well as one on facebook, one on a radio show and one in the metro herald, which ended last night, but no word from any of them. I loved the comics and I'm dying to go to the premiere, I even rang cineworld who directed me to Universal Ireland, who took my details and said they'd ring if any tickets opened up :( I really want to go to it

Could of sworn this was out on the 13th... just found out that it isn't until the 25th... Damn!

Still can't wait to see this, have read the first 3 books and the other books are in the post right now! With the movie, videogame and books I'v been going a bit Scott Pilgrim Mad over the last couple of weeks!

Still not sure about Michael Cera... his voice just doesn't suit the look and personality of Scott at all, oh well we'll see in due time.

I have to admit my initial reaction was the same, but having since re-read all 6 books together, there is a good story and a decent character arc through the series for both Scott and the supporting cast.

I think the film will actually have an advantage over the comics in that it may well be able to incorporate the retro-gaming references and nerdy joke in a less self-conscious way than the first couple of books did.

I saw the trailer for this in the cinema a few weeks ago and thought it looked great. Had never heard of Scott Pilgrim before but after looking it up and seeing all the video game references and music tied to it I thought this is something I'd really enjoy. Have a few of the comics coming in the post and have downloaded the game, which is great, looking forward to seeing the film now.
