IPhone signal issues

My factory unlocked 3GS is terrible at holding a 3G signal, whereas my Nokia E71 seems pretty good at holding a signal, as is my o2 broadband dongle.

Should I accept this is a common problem or does the iPhone have a fault?

I find reception in general to be pretty poor on the 3GS.

Where my E51 would've had 2 or 3 bars of basic GSM signal, the 3GS has "No Service"

WRT the 3G signal, I read somewhere that they deliberately did something alright that pushes EDGE prematurely. Damned if I can find the link now.

I guess I'll have to put up with it in that case. Now I come to think of it I was using it in the UK earlier this year and the signal reception was very patchy there as well - difficult to keep a 3G signal all the time.

Had some success browsing the net last night and sometimes it would hold the 3G signal but it does seem like it defaults to the slower Edge signal.

I've always thought that this is a big failing of the iPhone.
