its a fine line between clever and patronising, their new single definitely steps over that line...

Think the single is a bit much as well, some nice hooks on the other albums tracks. some god damn poor rhymes in places though... verging on the cringe

Each to their own I suppose but his lyrics are genius.

If you try and listen to it as not a true hip hop album it kinda helps, no point in putting him up against Immortal Technique et al but i think his flow is a bit better on this overall. I also think it's a little more preachy than the first album and that's putting me off but if he makes people listen to what is being said and use that as a stepping stone i think the message he has is solid. Even if a little cheesy at times...

Hate to break it to you lordgoat, but Immortal Technique's a fairly ****e MC as well...:P

The problem with the debut is that it was far far far far far far far too serious. As in one worries these two might suffocate so far they are shoved up there own arses. If this is even more 'preachy' then **** me.

The lead single aside, not really. Complete absense of nuance.

Bleurgh, this is why I just can't get into the music forums here on boards. Can't have a thread about anything without someone deciding they don't like it and having to piss all over it.

    Shame.

Your argument regarding the artist in question is what exactly...?

I apologise if you thought this thread was a love-in for Scroobius Pip and Dan Le Sac. Evidently you've failed to grasp the possibility of people having different opinions and debating with one another on a discussion forum. Thats your problem, not mine.

Theres debate and then there's what you're doing, which is stating opinion (in a rather over the top way) which doesn't really invite meaningful discussion.

As to the band, haven't heard the new stuff yet, looking forward to hearing it. Should be at the gig, I think I have a ticket.

Has it occured to you that I'm not being hyperbolic, and that my opinion is really just that they are aren't very good and make cringeworthy music with ghastly lyrics?

Debate 'meaningfully' with that if you will, funnily enough there is absolutely nothing 'meaningful' in what you two are doing, jumping on your high horse and whining makes things worse, at least I'm talking about the artist in hand.

Not being hyperbolic? I'd use the "Roll Eyes" smiley but that has to be one of the most irritating things ever!

There, thats a start. Next, some examples as where you feel this is most obviously in evidence. Followed maybe by a further drawing out of how you feel they could improve, maybe some acts you feel achieve what they are trying to do. And maybe even a witty one-liner to finish? Go on, I'd say you have it in you.

Ah well that was rather tongue in cheek, one has to admit there is a feeling of pretension in their music lyrically however (and their interviews). ;)
    There, thats a start.

I'm simply repeating what I've already said.

Its been a while since I listened to the debut, but 'Letter From God To Man' for example...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7KnGNOiFll4&feature=related

Not mad about the beat, largely uninteresting, and sampling works best when you find something hidden, old and obscure not something so well known, which has been pretty poorly flipped anyway. Similarly, technically the MC'ing isn't perfect, the breath control is a little off at times (note the increasingly heavy breaths at the end of a bar) and his flow is one pace throughout.

Small things compared to the lyrics though. Sledgehammer stuff, judgemental, arrogant, hypocritical, no nuance or finesse, packed full of emotion yes but it an highly dislikeable and manipulative sense. I dislike art that attempts to manipulate and force people to think or feel in such a blatant way - the above song is a perfect example of this.

Improvements - don't take yourself so bloody seriously, write lyrics that aren't so blatant, so brutal and so arrogant.
And maybe even a witty one-liner to finish? Go on, I'd say you have it in you.

:( Now your the one not being very nice...

I'm only kidding around man (I actually did think you had a witty one-liner in you but maybe there was too much pressure..) but thanks for going to the effort of that post.

I actually agree with you on that song. It is, and this would be a criticism of my own for several of their songs off the first album, too heavy-handed, both lyrically and musically. The use of the sample is shocking, lacks any kind of skill. I'd disagree that the best sampling neccessarily comes from the old and obscure, but in this case the lazy use of that one sample didn't help the song.

Onto the vocals. Sometimes I'd agree with a certain amount of heavy handedness when dealing with a subject, sometimes its the only way to reach a wide enough audience. Unfortunately, when you're using the Fisher Price "My first philosophy" book to interpret subjects, as seems to be the case here, you come across in a terrible infantile manner. This is a subject that has been dealt with endlessly over the last 150 years, if you're going to work with it, make sure you at least seem to aware of this.

I would also say that the writing of the lyrics does inhibit any natural sense of flow, seeming to say too many words in some lines, not enough in others. No changing of the "melody" as you say, though this is tied in with the lack of imagination in the music.

As you conclude yourself, there are serious problems with a song as barefacedly didactic as this. It leaves no room for interpretation or further insight, it presents its infantile philosophy as fact (as the word of God no less!) and its execution, musically, leaves a lot to be desired.

Jesus, just reading back, Pitchfork would never print that!

We seem to be in agreement regarding the problems with their music, always nice to be part of a thread with a happy ending...:p

Can't we all just, like, get along?

Hopefully some other people will chime in here soon, I'm looking forward to it.

Glad you sorted that out for whoever said this is why they don't post on boards music fora and then posted on a music foum thanks, you gave me a great laugh. Also the person you were criticising expressed their opinion much better than you did yours, perhaps you just can't handle people discussing something in a way you find difficult.

Each to their own Oz, i like IT for the message he tries to get across the same reason i like Pip, what i meant was that IT does it alot better, and i do think his voice control is alot better than pip's too. I think Pip's personal songs are better than when dealing with 'big themes'

Great gig, they put on a great show - perfect for the roisin but sadly the setlist was only an hour long with only one encore.

Brilliant gig last in Dolans in Limerick. Set was a bit short at one hour with one encore but they really rocked the place. Pip surfed the crowd twice. Only downer for me was they did not do Tommy C.

Scroobius will be doing a few songs and poems by himself in The Exchange in Temple Bar around half six this evening for the second State Intervention gig. Its free, should be very interesting. Good chance to see him if you couldn't get/afford a ticket.

So how was the Dublin gig guys? I couldn't make it in the end, raging

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭tomissex

Gotta say it was pretty epic! Good mix between Angles and The Logic of Chance and between fast and slow. I was at the front; shook Pip's hand so I went home happy!:D B.Dolan's set was really good as well, he really got the crowd going.
