If there is a pic of a can on the light it could be the oil pressure. Check the level.

no theres no oil can, its just a single rectangle orange light.

There is nothing at all on the light?

Unless she has got an engine management system, if so it could be that.Have to get it checked with a scanner.

Orange light sounds like oil pressure. Check your oil level

    Would it not be red?

Is it the same light that goes on when you switch on the ignition ?

Could it be your charge light and therefore a faulty alternator ?

If the '89 Mini uses the same warning light colour coding as earlier BMC cars, then orange is oil pressure, red is ignition.

This may sound stupid, but maybe it's the fuel light?
    :D

Oil is a red light on my '94 Mini. So's the battery light. I can't think of any orange lights, other than the ones with switches (fog lights, rear demister), which are rectangular also. Is it in the dash? Is it on the left or the right as you look at it? If it's left it's battery related, right is oil related. Is it on the centre switch panel? If it's the leftmost switch/light, it's caused by a lack of brake fluid pressure (which seems to fit in with starting the car and braking), but that's a red light on mine.

There'll be no engine management lights, or scanner ports or any of that either unfortunately, there's only two big warning lights I know of, and I'd imagine an '89 wouldn't be any more advanced than a '94. I've an aftermarket dash, but I'm fairly sure there's no petrol warning light in the original either. It could be an oil/water temperature light, but I didn't know there was one...

If your mini is original you should have an orange light to display oil pressure problems. If your oil levels are ok then you may have a faulty sender or connection to it. simple to replace. However if it is on when engine revs are low...which also happens when braking, ( foot off the accelerator) you need to get it checked out. Have you changed the oil and oil filter recently? Don't just assume it will go away. That could be very expensive.

Its your oil pressure warning lamp

Basically, you need to add oil to your engine.
