It depends how you jailbreaked it before.

If you used a dev-team jailbreak (i.e. Pwnagetool) then you must use that to build a custom ipsw (firmware bundle) this way it ensures you keep the baseband the same. The baseband is the part of the phone that interfaces with you cell carrier. Once it's updated it's near impossible to downgrade it.

If you used blackra1n to jailbreak I think you just update via iTunes then run blackra1n again. Although I'm not 100% sure as I used pwnagetool because I dislike blackra1n's jailbreak methods.

Someone else jailbroke it for me. Is there any way of finding out if it was jailbroken with pwnagetool or blackrain?

    not that i know off.

maybe someone more knowledgeable can help you with that, sorry.

when geohot released a jailbreak for the first iphone before the dev-team he rubbed it in their faces, basically he was a giant cock about it spouting that he was the greatest yadda yadda yadda. a week later the dev team looked at his jailbreak and actually reduced the code footprint by 2000 lines. which is a huge amount.

    * he releases things without fully testing all the outcomes.
    * his releases are usually way more bulkier.
    * he releases without any documentation - check his site when he releases something, * it's just a picture of him with a download link. i don't know about the rest of the internet but i kind of prefer having some documentation when i'm about to tinker with a > 500 euro device.

i can let most things slide, but i hate cocky ****ers especially software engineers who are cocky. they just deserve a punch in my opinion.
