i know most of ye are against PC world in general but take a leap of faith that i get a good deal on a laptop there...should i go for the cover plan or are laptops easy enough to fix myself?

I dont know what i am doing with desktops either but for example i was able to open up my old compaq single core AMD machine last night , reset the RAM and make my PC boot up again but i am not sure i could do any of that on a laptop?

I think coverplan is like 3 years of guarantees for about 130 quid including screen protection and theft cover in the first year, 24 hour phone support, in home service...help i still feel i am being swindled.

but if i dont take out the coverplan what do i do if it breaks?

Depending on what goes wrong with a laptop, they can either be fairly easy to repair or a complete pain in the ass to repair. They would be harder to repair than a desktop though. I used to be a big advocate of just using the house insurance, that was until my house insurance didn't repair my laptop because they don't cover overheating. :( I now get the extended warranties (depending on what it covers and price obviously) on stuff just for the peace of mind. Once bitten, twice shy and all that.

    €130 for 3 years cover ?

The first year they have to give you by law. So it's only two years complete cover with the accident/theft for the first year

By year 3 you could get a new laptop of similar spec for about three times the price of cover.

Bottom line , they make almost all of their profit on these cover plans. Unless you are very unlucky you are usually better off keeping the money

Agree with above, you are usually better off to avoid these plans. Ignore the pressure from staff, they just want commission or to hit their targets. Plus I hear making a claim can be a bit of a nightmare...

generally you are supposed to avoid these extended warrantees - BUT - ..... if you plan on using it like I use mine I would advise getting it.

I use my laptop several hours a day.

Basically - if you plan on using the laptop heavily...get it ...if not AVOID !!

Took out their coverplan on a laptop I purchased a few years back. Cut a long story short my laptop broke (more than once), first time it broke was within the first 6 months of purchase, had to wait six weeks to get it back and so much for a replacement to use while it was off getting fixed . Got it back and the same fault happened again 1 week later, more weeks of waiting and been messed about by the store etc...

From my experience the coverplan was a waste of money and not worth the paper it was written on, between messing and loopholes I would never go near PC World again for a laptop or PC. Thats not to say it happens all the time but be warned, just google their coverplan or even look through posts here on the boards, I'm not the only person to have had problems.

it turns out they have changed the coverplan it is extensively worse that i thought

€189 for 3 years cover and NO theft cover.
they do have a 28 day period in which the guarantee to fix it which is putting me off to be honest. damn dont know what to do

Had similiar probs as mentioned above in that it broke few times took couple of weeks to get it back then broke again etc etc.

Final straw came when it fell down the stairs onto a wooden floor , wasnt much left of it and was told it would be replaced, got phone call few days later saying they were not paying so done up my legal letter and got reinburshed fairly easy then.

Personally I wouldnt bother with it again but thats down to you but if you do and if push comes to shove then dont back down or be fobbed off, but be prepared to get messy.
