Hi All. I have just received a new bike for Christmas and I am really eager to get going on it. The weather is the the first problem I am encountering. I do not plan on doing very long distances or marathons or anything like that, just maybe 1 to 1.5 hours a day. It is not a racing bike, just an ordinary 15 speed bike. What would the best gear for me to get that would be appropriate for most weather conditionsconfused.gif.

Is it a mountain bike or hybrid? What kind of cycling to you want to do? Sunday spins or commuting to work?

For this time of year, you need to keep your core, legs and extremities warm.

Core: Long sleeve baselayer, long sleeve jersey and a windproof soft shell jacket will do for cold, dry days. I'm guessing you won't want to head out when it's lashing rain.....yet!

Legs: Leg warmers under your shorts to turn them into tights or a pair of bib tights. Do you have padded cycling shorts? These are the best investment if you want to get some use out of your new bike.

Extremities: Good gloves, thin skullcap under your helmet, warm socks (wool) and overshoes to fit over your cycling shoes/runners and keep out wind and rain.

Now is a good time to buy with Xmas sales and if you want to be comfortable in this weather it's worth spending a little extra for quality gear.

Basically what chakattack said regarding the gear. Long tights are a bit more comfortable (and warmer in the crotch) than shorts and leg warmers but the latter is far more flexible. Get shorts or tights with a "bib" (the straps) - they are more comfortable and stay in place better.

But at the moment it is extremely cold and probably too icy, especially around Athlone, for most to be heading out safely.

These are extreme weather conditions that this county only sees for a few weeks a year; when it is cold but not icy you can head out with the right clothing.
