Mr. Brooks - very underrated

I recently caught this movie on Sky Movies, then seen it on Tescos for 7 euro and watched it with the family today and everyone was glued to the telly. Basically Kevin Costner play's a successful businessman/philanthropist hiding a big secret - he's a profilific and extremely methodical serial killer. William Hurt plays the other voice in his head that encourages him to feed his urges and really gets in the role. Ok Demi Moore is the supposedly hard-boiled detective on the case but aside from her character, it's a pretty enjoyable thriller, has a few twists and if you're a Dexter-addict like myself, it's just fantastic to see another form of entertainment told with a killer as protaganist, which never gets old (such as American Psycho which I love too).

Anyone else seen it? From looking on IMDB and Twitter, it seems to have a much more favourable response from audiences than critics

I loved it. The chemistry between Costner and Hurt is brilliant.

I've seen it myself, I thought it was very entertaining and, as mentioned, woefully underappreciated.

I read on IMDB that a sequel could be in the works, so this mightn't be the last we see of Mr. Brooks...

Fantastic film and quite underrated. Costner and Hurt are indeed a brilliant partnership. It's enough to make you watch it all the way through. Soundtrack is good too. One of the top films of '09 that I've seen.

I watched it last week and really enjoyed it too. Costner and Hurt were really good as was the CSI chick who played his wife. Demi was Demi I suppose but yeah great shout OP was a really good thriller.

As far as I know the story was imagined as a three-film arc but the movie didn't perform that well at the box office, it made $48m from a $20m budget which I'm sure covered it's costs, but doesn't exactly scream "sequel" I suppose. It was also released in the summer which seems a pretty obvious mistake too. Let's hope a sequel happens though

But keep it in the same vein of Mr. Brooks and not ruin it. A sequel would be most welcome though.

I saw this movie a few years ago and thought it was pretty good. Was a bit weary, considering KC was in it, but it's definitely worth watching

Really? I think Kevin Costner is a pretty good actor, and in the spirit of the thread, very underrated. He fell out of the spotlight after The Postman bombed, but he's still able to deliver the goods. Jesus, take a look at Open Range, a thoroughly brilliant film:

    I'd really recommend it.

It was sounding like a great movie, especially the Dexter part til I saw that Dane Cook was in it.

I kinda miss Costner being a more prolific actor, anyone who says he's a bad one needs to watch JFK, and he's directed two of the greatest westerns ever made in Dances With Wolves and Open Range, i keep meaning to check this out but never get round to it, might see if its going cheap in the sales

Shockingly, Dane Cook is actually very good in Mr. Brooks. I'd say give it a watch before you brush it off.

I just can't stand the fecker he gets on my goat to no end, does he have a lead role or just supporting, in other words would I have to spend very long looking as his mug?

Supporting role. Honestly, I hate the guy as a comedian, but he really surprised me here, there's none of his usual smugness at all.

Hmm, I think I'll be adding that one to my list. Have to finish watching ''Couples Retreat'' first and I might get started on it then. Thanks.

Open Range is brilliant, Costner and Duvall are outstanding in it, and the support cast is spot on for each and every role. Westerns and Costner are a great fit. I am a huge fan of westerns from the 1930's right up to the modern era, but Costner always manages to tick all the right boxes for me in that genre.

I am always amused by the hate that Costner seems to get.Even the man's so called awful films are generally easy to watch, and he has a number of films that are of the highest calibre despite them getting vwery little notice.

As a rule with Costner, if I see that he is the man behind the camera as well as in front of it, then I know I am in for a good film.

A truly fantastic film, Costner and Hurt are astounding with some of the best onscreen chemistry in a long time. I never understood the hate for Costner, while he's made a few duds but who hasn't. Costner on form is a force to rival the best. Dances With Wolves, Silverado, Open range, Mr Brooks, ect all showcase a versatile and talented actor.

Someone mentioned that the film only made 48 million, that was just in the US excluding overseas and DVD. A sequel is very likely as the film did quite well overseas and was a hit on DVD. Fingers crossed otherwise the guys behind it may go back to making Tim Allen films.

Why do you guys not mention Mr. Brooks daughter?...Ms. Panabaker?

It made $28m in the U.S and $19m overseas, not sure about DVD. I think since it's been 2 years since release and not a word the chances of a sequel are pretty small, unless Costner wants to stump up some of his own cash for its production, like he did for Swing Vote. Personally I think the studio dropped the ball by giving it a summer release

48 million return on a 20 million investment is quite good. You're looking at another 20 million on DVD and rental sales so trebling your money on a low budget film isn't bad at all. Costner has repeatedly said there would be a trilogy and as he was a producer on the film I can see a sequel being made. It's only been two years and with Bruce A. Evans busy on Diver then you can understand the delay. A bit of time between sequels can be a good thing, stops the production being rushed.

It's definitely a good return but we don't know what deals were cut between the studio (MGM) and overseas distributors. I'm sure you're aware the reason The Golden Compass didn't get a sequel is because New Line sold the international rights before release and the movie died a death in the U.S ($70m domestic, $302m overseas). Either way I would love a sequel but it may end up a vanity project for Costner a few years down the line because two years on and now word whatsoever from the studio is never a good sign no matter the scenario

There is still talk though about redoing the Golden Compass and with the current state of Hollywood I could well imagine well see more in the series before too long. As for Mr Brooks 2, I do recall Costner saying they would take a few years between sequels though being honest the recent talk about his return to the western genre has me far more excited.

The reason we could see a sequel is down to just how cheaply they can make it. The studio would be looking at 15-20 million budget and if they can get the original cast back then the film is pretty much guaranteed to make a profit.

I liked it quite a lot. I don't often go for the streaming shtick, but this is one of those I streamed back when I did. Quite good. Saw it on DVD yesterday in HMV, didn't take note of the price. Think I'll pick it up one of the days. I picked up 5 DVDs yesterday, so I didn't bother with it yesterday.

Demi Moore was as good as she gets I think. If anything, on second viewing, Dane Cook is the film's weak link.

Watched this last night too after seeing it mentioned here, very glad that I did - excellent flick, many similarities with 'Dexter' I thought.

One aspect that didn't seem right :
The whole daughter thing - her entire behaviour just seemed to be a bit way off tangent and I doubt if I (as a dad) could have totally forgiven the little b*tche's misdemeanors so easily and covered her trail so handily.

Kevin Costner has always been a very good film maker despite his very notable duds.
