This may be a stupid question so I will say this now. Im aware that cars act sluggish in colder weather but the ins and outs of it are alien to me as I am not engine/technically minded.

Why are there so many damn cars broken down on our roads?

I'd imagine a weak or dead battery would be the main reason. We are not used to this type of weather so are rarely prepared for it. Diesel engines are also harder to start in very cold weather.

yepp, weak batteries just die in the cold; one or two dead glow plugs and your diesel won't start; if you've been topping up your coolant with water all year your engine will freeze (and crack); accelerator cables, clutch cables and handbrake cables freeze in their sleeves (if they're a bit cracked); engine and gearbox oil gets thicker (making the engine harder to start) and if it gets really, really cold your diesel will turn to wax.

If you park on level surface, leave the car in first gear rather than on handbrake. That way the handbrake won't freeze shut in the cold.

My car makes grinding noises(possibly from power steering fluid) when its cold. I normally leave my car running for 5 minutes before I move off in the mornings. Its fine during the day following that.

It could do with a good service but I hand it back in a few days so...............
