Ok, Ok... so I know this is a stab in the dark but...

I dropped my Maxtor 500GB desktop external hard drive the other day and now it won't work. The power indicator light flickers but doesn't stay on and there's a god-awful noise coming out of it. My laptop recognises that I've plugged something into the USB but doesn't recognise the drive itself, if you know what I mean... I wouldn't mind but it only fell about 9 inches but I suppose it was onto a tiled floor...

Is there anyway I could take it to our local repair shop and get yer man to take out the acual drive so I could retreive the approx 350G of photos I have on it?? Or is just completely fooked? Any advice much appreciated!!

You cant just open a drive like you do a motor. That noise means the arm is fecked. You can pay through the nose for data recovery that might might might get some of your data. They charge by MB afaik and you pay whether or not the data is corrupted or not.

    In future keep two copies.

Yup profesional data recovery is the only option here, unless... You are really compitent. you could buy another doner drive, and take out the platters and put them in the new drive, but since it sounds like your arm is banjaxed i'd say the surface of the platter is scratched pretty badly.
