    Hi All,

I know you guys probably have been asked this before but I had a quick look and could not find anything. I am looking to buy a satellite receiver-system; I am based in the midlands and would like something that will pick up whatever is going really. The thing is I do not understand the terminology and so on so I am looking for advice. I did see a package (dish-receiver) in B&Q for around €50.00 but though this thing could not be up to much. I don’t want to pay the earth for this but would like something that will work. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'd go for a freesat box (not FTA) to be honest, to get the 7-day EPG + automatic updating of the channel list if a channel moves transponder.

reviews + pricing of freesat boxes:

I bought the cheap combo from aldi or lidl a few years ago and still use them. The receiver is a silvercrest, it's very basic but does the trick nicely, haven't had a single problem with it. The combo was excellent value, imhaho.

I have since bought a better receiver but use the silvercrest in my bedroom.

If you're not frightened of spending a few bob, the Humax PVR is probably the way to go.

The dish and installation would be an extra €200 on top of that (ouch), but it is a decent bit of kit. Someone on here might also be able to point you in the direction of a better deal. Anyway; it picks up all your FTA cross channel TV and radio stations. You can record them onto the unit's internal hard drive (and even copy/move them onto an external hard drive to watch on your PC. I've seen a few posts where people have had problems with them, but mine hasn't missed a beat yet.
