Rather than being facetious about it, it is an honest question. I just find it amazing on the coldest night of the year, after rain yesterday, none of the roads, INCLUDING the primary N71 National Route have been gritted/salted to the West of Cork City.

I can only presume that the Cork County Council workers, or whoever are responsible for keeping the main National Routes clear are simply not working, on what for many of us is still a normal working day.

the council will grit the roads on any day of the year if necessary - they have staff on standby. They don't grit all the roads however (would be prohibitively expensive), and as they're all strapped for cash they've probably cut back on previous years. Surprised if the N71 hasn't been done though.

It seems to be the former. Colleague comes into Cork City from Dungarvan and he said that the Waterford side of Youghal is fine (gritted/salted), but as soon as you reach the Cork border the road (N25 this time) turn to sheet ice.

He said Meath are also not gritting as they have no budget left.

Well that's not true. They roads were a state today (noty to mention footpaths, plenty of broken bones around Navan town including 3 broken hips from mass goers at one church apparently) but i did see the council gritting the N3 this morning. Don't know how much good it did as the county is like an open air ice rink

The "thaw" in Limerick resulted in rain rather than wintery showers, but the rain froze as it hit the ground resulting in a nasty layer of sheer ice in places. Some thawing for an hour or two in the middle of the day but frost again this evening. Met Éireann reports seemed to be wildly inaccurate, although presumably it was hard-to-predict conditions.

As for the roads - apparently even the motorway here is untreated. Madness!

I don't really think it's acceptable to cancel gritting over the holidays - even if people heeded advice not to travel, there are at least some essential services still provided, and the people providing those need to be able to get from place to place alive.
