Passengers were rescued by a steam locomotive after modern rail services were brought to a halt by the snowy conditions in south-east England. Trains between Ashford and Dover were suspended on Monday when cold weather disabled the electric rail.
Some commuters at London Victoria faced lengthy delays until Tornado - Britain's first mainline steam engine in 50 years - offered them a lift.
They were taken home "in style", said the Darlington-built engine's owners.

Just goes to show that sometimes the older simpler technologies are unaffected by the weather!

    Ha, thats pretty cool.
It's an amazing looking engine and this is exactly the kind of publicity it needs to keep it funded properly :)

Have to ask though why were there no "thunder-bird" diesels available to do the job:confused:

A thunder-bird is a diesel (or electric) loco that's earmarked to run out to tow stranded train and such.

Edit: never mind, having read the full article I see some people just hitched a lift on a standard train
