If you book dental/eye/ear work for 2010 (first quarter) before the end of this year you'll be able to avail of 2009 PRSI benefits for the work. From 1st January 2010 a lot of PRSI dental/optician/aural benefits will be removed. Further details from the "Irish Dental Association" here.

And you can get your eye test done before 31st as well. This benefit is going to be removed as well.

I got my eye test done last week in specsavers. Since I was eligible for free glasses as well from their €59 range, I selected a different one from their higher range and paid the difference.

I have always paid full for my clean - If I supply my pps number it should have been covered by my PRSI ?

    Here's a summary of the PRSI 'Treatment Benefits' scheme, full reference here;

    Dental Benefit

Under this scheme, dental treatment is provided by private dentists who are on a Department of Social and Family Affairs panel. Lists of dentists on the panel are available in DSFA offices, employment exchanges, etc. Most dentists are on the panel so you should not have any difficulty finding one. The dentist or the Department will have the application forms. These forms require details such as your Personal Public Service Number (PPSN). If you are a dependent spouse, you should give the PPSN of the insured person.
The Department pays the full cost of an oral examination and gum treatment once a year, and scaling and polishing once every six months. It also pays a contribution toward the cost of fillings, extractions, dentures and root canal therapy as often as you require. In 2010 the Treatment Benefit Scheme will be restricted to free dental examinations.
You can find more information about the range of dental treatments offered under the Treatment Benefit Scheme.
    Optical Benefit

The benefit is provided by opticians/optometrists who have a contract with the Department of Social and Family Affairs.
    You are entitled to:
    • A free sight test - sight tests for VDUs, driving licences, etc., are not covered under the Treatment Benefit Scheme. Safety glasses are also excluded.
    • An eye examination for contact lenses - the Department will pay a fixed amount of €22.51 and you pay the balance
    • Free glasses if you choose a certain type of frame. If you choose a frame other than the type(s) covered under the Treatment Benefit Scheme, the Department will pay a fixed amount of €42.07 towards the cost of your glasses and you pay the balance.
    • Replacement lenses for existing frames
    • Contact lenses - if you need contact lenses on medical grounds, the Department will pay up to half the cost, subject to a fixed maximum of €760, provided you have a doctor's recommendation. Disposable lenses are not covered under the Treatment Benefit Scheme.
In 2010 the Treatment Benefit Scheme will be restricted to free eyesight examinations.
    Aural Benefit

Hearing aids may be provided by suppliers who have a contract with the Department of Social and Family Affairs. The Department pays half the cost of a hearing aid subject to a fixed maximum of €760 for each hearing aid every two years. It also pays half the cost of repairs to aids.

Likewise ... is it not too late to be submitting forms etc now though to be on this scheme?

check the first thread in the dental issues forum. if you pay PRSI, you are entitled to a free check up and 2 free cleans a year, but this ends next week. if you call your dentist and make an appointment, and give your pps number, they can check if you're entitled to it, but you need to make an appointment for the first 3 months of the new year to avail of it. it makes certain treatments like fillings/extractions/root fillings cheaper too.

How much is a clean without PRSI if I dont book beore end of the month?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,939 ✭✭✭ballsymchugh

it depends on who you go to. it's variable, from 50yoyo to maybe 150? i'm not sure on the scale of it. when there's no set price, it'll come down to how much you need done and how long it takes/more than one visit etc

A clean in my dentist is 50 euros.
Fillings you get 30 quid off, but unless you confirm the prices beforehand, some dentists just up the price when you go to pay and keep the additional for themselves - 100 quid for 20 minutes work isn't enough for some of them.
