Nothing new. There's always been a **** load of racing on Stephens' Day. Having said that half of them will probably fall to the weather.

I figured that about the weather. This is the first year I've taken an interest in racing in this country so I had no idea. Can't imagiane what its like for a busy bookmakers:eek:

At least theres loads of time to look at the form! Probably pick 2 or three meetings to concentrate on and probably hit the sky+ on ATR.

This is incredible though...11 meetings!? They should move two on to the next day when theres only 5.

3 in Ireland. Any of the big bank holidays are always that way.

It used to be like that for the bank holidays. Definitely Easter Monday, May, August and Stephens Day, but its not quite the same these days.

Its a legacy from the old 19th century when people used to go racing on bank holidays, but with courses now more reliant on the cash from the SIS/Turf TV - they do/used to get a subsidy for every race shown in the bookies - more and more courses are stopping bank holiday meetings. Maybe the deals with RUK/ATR have stopped this to some extent but it seems like Stephens Day is the last hold out on this tradition.

Anyone know the year when Limerick was the only meeting that did not fall victim to the weather? Think that it might have been 93 0r 94.

Every jumps jockey alive and fit must be riding then? Maybe I could get a gig, could always do with the money!

I'm looking forward to buying the RP on Saturday! It'll be the size of a phone book:D Think it'll be any more expensive?

Trying to get the papers up is a logistic exercise in itself.

I believe you are incorrect. I think it was 1995. Regards Mr Flair

Hi Nulty I remember back in the 70s & 80s there would be at least 20 meetings in the uk on stephens day and a simalar amount on easter monday every year a lot of the meetings were mickey mouse though. Dont know how many will survive the weather this saturday

Betting shop worker I'm guessing? Cos I can testify to that - some nightmare trying to fit them all in. :p

It's a Christmas tradition to go racing St Stephens Day/Boxing Day hence so many meetings. For many tracks that day is the busiest of the year - they'll always get a good crowd.

Shows how quickly 11 meetings can be reduced to only 5 or 6 if the weather conditions aren't favourable....

Just saw a status update on Facebook saying that the races were off tomorrow in Leopardstown. Trying to find a source online for this since they are offline now, but they do live next to Leopardstown

EDIT: source of this was a person working security for tomorrow

Doubt it. There is absolutely no mention of it on the Attheraces website.

Any update on whats happening with limerick tomorrow. I'm in ennis and the roads are completly frozen coming out of my estate whick happens to be on a hill.

I can't see people wanting to travel if the roads are this bad around the country

Living in Limerick and I imagine that it will on. Todays rain should thaw any remaining ice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 292 ✭✭briman1983

Has the rain that fell today not frozen again on the roads. It has around ennis. roads are lethal. Was out there about an hour ago and car was sliding all around the place

Great days racing ahead, this is the real Christmas day.

I'm going to take on Long Run in the feltham, basically because it's his first run for a new trainer in a new country, has never gone right handed and is being ridden by a tree. Not sure what with yet though so I may just lay him and leave it at that.

Go Native is my bet in the Christmas Hurdle, although him and Starluck will both be swinging turning in as I expect Binocular to have set sail for home at that stage and they may not get to him. On the basis of the fighting fifth I'll take him on here.

A place lay on imperial commander I think, has never run well right handed and seems better fresh, the haydock race may have taken a lot out of him and tbh I just don't think h will have the speed on kemptons sharp track. I'll go with barber shop to finish second to KS. Master medic and Racing Demon to place might not be an awful bet.

I'm also against Sizing Europe in Ireland, most likely winner I suppose but he's no odds on shot in this line up. May not have a bet in this race but if I do it will be Osana.

    Just
