    Hi guys,

Did anyone see the British Airways 747 (400 i think) parked up at EIDW this morn? I passed at about 11.30 and it was parked at a gate.

Anyone know why it was here?

Must have been diverted from the UK somewhere due to weather. Damn, stuck in bloody work!! The last time I heard there was a 747 there I drove out, but while passing the new water tower on the M50 it departed. Will probably be gone soon enough though. :(

Id love to see it taking off today, could nip to the airport to watch it but cant hang around it all day to wait for it, any way of finding out in advance when it will be departing if it hasnt already done so (14.00 now)

Just passed over my office (Dublin 15). Lovely sight. Looked like a 400, but stand to be corrected (as my user name shows) just squatting in this forum!:D

I'm surprised there weren't more, Heathrow closed at about 7pm yesterday I think and all the other London airports plus Manchester were either closed or severly restricted.

Foggy may have had an interesting drive home last night, I know I did:rolleyes:

At 4pm yesterday I was on EI715 pushing back from Stand 180. :D
Just as the snow started. Unbelievably taxied out to 09R with no holding or giving way. 5pm Passport Control Cork Airport.

Should I have been on shift I would just have got home before it all started but may have had problems on the Piccadilly Line at 5.30 this morning. BA178 is BA's last longhaul arrival into LHR. The previous I think is the BA238 from Boston an hour earlier. Tonights BA178 arrival is delayed by 70 minutes due in 21:50.

Boeing 747 still an awesome plane look at. To think that the prototype of this plane was designed by Joe Sutter from slide rule and paper back in the mid 60's.

diverted from jfk due to no room in heathrow for it (wide body) due to congestion from gatwick closing etc. it was 36 hrs late from jfk.delays at jfk due to weather,congestion,de-icing,no spare stands etc.they pushed back from jfk and spent a few hours on the ground apparently. it was told to divert to dublin when it was passing over cork.

...there's something so amazingly beautiful about those 747's.. I never tire looking at them! I wasn't aware that the runways in Dublin were long enough for these airplanes though? Clearly they are, I guess.

747's have been around a long time. Several carriers have operated 747s through Dublin in decades past, they were relatively common before the advent of the Airbuses. From my spotting days, I was amazed at how little runway they seemed to need to take off compared to other planes, if I was watching from near to where the planes were rotating on their takeoffs, I was always disappointed by the 747s as they were generally well in the air well before that.

i am prob the least informed on here ,but keen.

i was under the impression that the last built Jumbos were pretty worn out by now for flying with the likes of BA. that after rebuilds would be retired to Freigh.

Am i way out on this /

And as a for instance, where did the two Aer Lingus jumbos from the eighties end up?

Air France operates a weekly B744F service Chicago-DUB-CDG, usually on Saturdays, so 747s are not an uncommon sight at Dublin.

Over the years I can recall Dublin being visited by 747s of British Airways, Air France, World, Air Canada, TWA, Pan Am, Alitalia, Qantas, Thai, KLM, Nigeria Airways, Virgin, Atlas, UPS, Singapore, Tower Air, Corsair, Iberia, El Al, UTA, South African and Air Mauritius, to name just some. Some of these have been on charter flights and some for maintenance only. Even before the construction of the present main runway, 747s visited Dublin. Runway length is generally not an issue for the type unless a direct long-distance flight is being operated.

Sadly EI-BED "St Kieran" ( 747-130, cn 19748/44 ) ended up in a heap in Tuscon at the Davis Monthan AFB "Boneyard", her Airframe totaled 101,000hrs, she was only supposed to go for 68,000hrs.

    And

EI-ASI "St Patrick" "St Columcille" ( 747-148, cn 19744/84) was scrapped in 2002 in Tijuana, Mexico, but not before serving also/with Air Siam HS-VGB, Air Algerie EI-ASI, and Kabo Air 5N-ZZZ.

I believe it hadn't been for the Shannon stop off they could have added a good number of years on to their service.

:) When I first saw that picture (of the Aer Lingus 747) I thought that it must be a fake! It looks so... ...odd. I have had the luxury of being on a 747-400 before too though, going from Madrid to Buenos Aires. It was the most comfortable journey I've ever had, and I stayed awake during the entire 13 hour journey through the night. It was just a real rivelage to be on such an airplane that I had been inspired by since I first set eyes on it.

I had the pleasure on flying on one also, from Heathrow to Mauritius with BA.
The airport in Mauritius is quiet small and the 747 had to do a 180 turn at the end off the runway as there was no taxiway running alongside.
Hopefully soon I'll get another trip on one.
They are a truly amazing feat of engineering.

Just to add to the 747 list, Air Atlanta Icelandic used to run a weekly charter coming up to Christmas from Keflavik to Dublin (for Icelandic shoppers) with a 747 from the mid 1990s up until the early 2000s (I think).

I was lucky enough to take one of the return flights and spend a weekend to Reykjavik.

Actually it was at Marana (MZJ), not Davis-Monthan (which is a military facility).

Indeed your right, Marana - Pinal Airpark (Silver Bell AHP) (MZJ)
    :)

Although Airliners.net shows her Cockpit section at Tucson - Davis-Monthan AFB (DMA / KDMA)
