You know, off the back of a breakdown truck?

We've got 2 5 Series Auto's that need to go down the country tomorrow, and a recovery guy with a flat bad who will do it.

There's only space for one car on the truck bed and he usually drags the second one behind, but I'm sure I've read that you aren't supposed to do this with Auto's.

Or could he put the back wheels up and drag the fronts?

Chances of NVD being able to pick up Dublin at lunch tomorrow and go to Cork via Waterford before close of business?

Looks like we might have to make alternative arrangements

If that would be my car, then no way I would like to do this, because I would be worried that since the engine does not run, the automatic gearbox does not get oil pressure/flow and it would damage the box.

That sounds like the technical explanation I was looking for and couldn't remember.

    Taken from the Bentley Manual.

Edit: It's the Bentley Manual covering the 5 series.

Shouldn't be a problem to drag it with the rear wheels in the air.

Well excuse me for jumping to the obvious meaning of Bentley manual, ie a manual for Bentley's :P

Drop the prop shaft and you'll be grand otherwise all 4 wheels off the ground for prolonged towing.

Previous poster is correct. Prolonged tow will cause damage to tranny with no cooling.

The only way to do this is to load one on the flatbed, and drag the other on the front wheels with the steering locked. Done this way the car comes to no harm.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The OP said if there is a car already on the flatbed and is pulling another one behind.

ROR's problem is sorted now I know but regarding towing with the rear wheels off the ground: Surely you'd have some job locking the steering sufficiently straight that dragging the car from Dublin to Cork wouldn't make sh1te of the tyres?

It's the same as with for example a bust drive shaft/diff, you wouldn't want to make it worse either.

In case of the BMW's you just lift them up at the rear wheels and no worries. You're only f*cked if you've got a 4WD :)
