Entries for Diamond Quest Ireland 2010 race are now open.
DQI is an exhilarating running, biking and kayaking race with diamond and £600 cash prizes to raise money for the African Schools Trust charity. A great training target to really test your body.

On Sat 15th May 2010 competitors will cross the beautiful scenery of the Carlingford and Mourne Mountains, Ireland. An action packed race designed to challenge strength, stamina and agility by experienced race organizers from Adventure Ireland and Causeway Coast Adventure Racing on behalf of the charity.
Solo competitors or 2 person teams start from King Johns Castle in Carlingford for a 15km run up and down the Cooley Mountains then along a forest path followed by a short 1km kayak section from Omeath to Warrenpoint and finish with a 45km bike ride through the heart of the Mournes sweeping down to the sea.

Everest climber Hannah Shields, who supports the event said: “Taking part in a race like this will give competitors such a fantastic buzz of adrenaline as well as the great feeling of helping so many needy children in Africa.”

The African Schools Trust charity supports 1000 disadvantaged children from 4 schools in the Nairobi slums, Kenya with daily food. Exam results have improved so much that this year record numbers are graduating from the secondary schools. The charity has bought books, paid teachers’ salaries, improved the school buildings, bought school land and contributed to the building of a school.

Lucy Jaffa, Charity trustee, said “DQI 2009 was a fantastic success, we had great feedback from the competitors like “I thought the course was excellent, tough at times and a brilliant course!” “As a slow first time adventure racer it was a good format with superb views and a very varied course.” “The race is as tough as Gaelforce and a good training session for Gaelforce.” “Thanks so much for a wonderful weekend and race. I was lucky enough to win a diamond. What a fantastic prize, I didn’t believe it until I saw it. It’s being made into a ring for my wife. I’ve now got permission to enter as many races as I like!”
Entries are now open for DQI 2010 at www.eventelephant.com/diamondquestireland

That looks like a decent event. Seems like a good distance and manageable by most.

Bit of a spin from Mayo but will mark it down as a potential

Link to Categories & Prizes page here

We have a new relay section for pairs but no mention is given on the website about prizes for them, I've been in touch with Lucy from AST to ask if there will be prizes for them.

Like last year you won't have to win the event to pick up the best prizes :) which gives everyone a chance.

Causeway I have a few friends possibly interested. They would like to know the minimum standard of fitness that would be recommended to take part?

Thanks in advance.

Standard of fitness won't need to be that high, pairs can do the event as relay teams.
If they could run a 10k they'll be able to do the run section, even if they need to walk parts we'll not be rushing them off the route. The cycle section won't be much longer than a marathon and all on road so again should be doable by most.

Discounts for internet nerds! We need more of this! Clashes with the IMRA Avonbeg race though. Hmmmm. Decisions, decisions. Too many good races on.

Can you tell me the closing date for this event. Do we still have time to enter?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭Causeway

Hi just a quick note to let you know that a few changes have taken place at Diamond Quest Ireland. The full management and organisation of the 2010 event has been taken over by Causeway Coast Adventure Racing Club.

Entry fees are £45 until 24th April when using the promo code boardie or DQIFB, you can still enter until 1st May but prices will go up after the 24th April.

Hopefully see you there.

Diamond Quest Ireland Run/Kayak/Run/Bike. 15km Hill run from Carlingford to Omeath, 1km kayak from Omeath to Warrenpoint, 4.5km run from Warrenpoint to Kilbroney Park followed by the 45km bike loop through the Mournes. Route covers some of the best parts of the Cooley & Mourne mountains. Entry fees from £45 when using the promo code of DQIFB.

If you're not into all this multisport stuff the run/kayak/run can be done on it's own or the bike section can be done on it's own as a 45km TT, we'll have a start window which is still TBC but likely to be over the period of 1hr, you be timed from the start in Kilbroney Park, mid way through the route near Spelga and again at the finish back in Kilbroney Park were you'll get a quick bite to eat.

All welcome and it would be great if you could help spread the word.

More details here

Is it a bus to the start setup for this?

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 173 ✭✭Causeway

Yes we'll bus you from Kilbroney Park round to Carlingford for the start, you'll then finish up back in Kilbroney Park.

what type of goodies do you get as a finisher?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to to you.

A few changes have taken place here at Diamond Quest Ireland. The full management and organisation of the 2010 event has been taken over by Causeway Coast Adventure Racing Club.
CCAR were the team that put the race together last year and were organising the event this year, African Schools Trust were managing the event but due to family commitments (3 very young children) Lucy was finding it difficult to put the time and effort into managing the event. Rather than cancelling the event we thought it would be better to carry on with the event.

The above has some slight affects on the event:
• Those already entered and paid £55 will now have one of 2 options.
• Option 1: A £10 refund which we will give you on the day of the event.
• Option 2: We will donate the £10 to AST.
• Please inform us which option you would like at info@diamondquestireland.com
The reduced entry fee will offset the changes we need to make to the event:
• We will no longer be able to provide the diamonds as prizes for the event.
• The prize pot will be reduced but will still be drawn out of a hat for all finishers.
• There will be no T-Shirts and no finger buffet at the prize giving.
Other than above we don’t foresee any other changes to the event.

Bikedock have come onboard and are planning on sponsoring the contents of a goodie bag, not sure what the contents will be just yet, other than that your entry fee will go towards covering the insurance for the event, the £400 prize money and £500 worth of trophies and other running costs of the event.

Just noticed on their website that it is cancelled - does anyone know why?

Yep low numbers enetered and more importantly insufficient numbers of marshals were two of the main factors.

I can never understand why some events take off brilliantly and others just dont catch on. Take WAR for example, 1st time running this year and over 600 did it. Am I missing something?

Thats a shame, I had heard several people were registering to avail of the last of cheap rates this weekend.

Is this one of the down sides of having so many events on this years calendar ?

I guess for many people its a little harder to pay for all these events far in advance.

If you have an injury for one you can roll on and do the next so you don't want to risk paying

I know that doesn't make it any easier for the organisers. Really enjoyed this event last year.

Has everyone received their refunds from Diamond Quest yet or am I on my own here?

Seems to me that me credit card should have been refunded by now.

• Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 362 ✭✭MREGAN

I havent had mine yet. I paid through paypal and thought that was the reason for the delay.

The event organiser has been in contact with me and is waiting for Event Elephant to get back to him. They set up the payment details so they have to authorize the refunds.
