I see an ad in the paper today saying

Free Setanta on Christmas Day and St Stephens Day. Simply go to satellite channel 423 & watch for free.

I am assuming it will be just Setanta Ireland.

The ad implies as much. Which is strange because you can't get Setanta Ireland without Setanta Sports 1 on satellite (unlike cable where Setanta Ireland is basic but Setanta Sports 1 is premium). There isn't any live sport on Setanta Sports 1 those days anyway, Setanta have been nice and thrown both the live football and rugby on Setanta Ireland.

They must be desparate for subscribers.

Is it Setanta Sports 1 that is free?

Great news, still won't consider subscribing though. :D

I would guess, no. It is probably aimed at Sky subscribers who don't have Setanta. In other words, people who are in a position to subscribe immediately. It will probably be broadcasted FTV as opposed to FTA.

I do stand to be corrected though.

nothing live or of interest on setanta 1... Ireland are showing schools finals aswell on christmas day.. Good day of live stuff on the 26h...

nice bit of sport on stephens day alright. I wonder though what they will try next year when they have no magners league for stephens day? is it a sign of things to come?

whatever they are up to MSK CH on channel 433 & MSK extra on CH 437 as well as LFC on CH 434(although thats not new) are all FTA(not even FTV) at the moment.

It is nearly 2AM in the morning and both MSK Channels are showing a hurling match between Tip and Cork at the moment?

EDIT: The hurling match just ended and finished with a Setanta Logo?I think MSK is a work-around for getting some Irish sporting events back to the UK or a future Premioum add on to the Setanta Sports pack on Satelite/Cable or just for pub use?

MSK has always been FTA and Liverpool TV has been FTA since the demise of Setanta Sports in GB.

Can this be got with a FTA set up? I have scanned but cannot find anything in the dross.

Setanta have retained their fa cup rights (irish rights) as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭channelsurfer

did espn not get any irish rights? { edit i see they are only advertising it for this year as the espn deal only kicks in next year in the uk.... i would assume espn will pick up irish rights to complement their uk rights then.... and all the matches setanta are advertising are available FREE on itv and the thefa.com......so why would you bother subscribing to them?????

Msk Extra has golf on Now !

they should put Setanta Ireland as part of the general sky package here, i doubt they have many subscribers left?

Man City vs Stoke City blacked out for viewers in NI. Presume this means Setanta are operating FTV rather than FTA. Is this correct?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Yes. It was never going to be FTA.

Setanta must be fairly desperate considering they are showing old episodes of Top Gear.

Aren't they losing Magners League coverage from the end of this season too.

What exactly do they have left ?

F1 is on BBC (far far better coverage)

Setanta have 3pm football from the EPL - & thats there only draw...

Overpriced sub that only a fool would pay for.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 742 ✭✭✭channelsurfer

any idea how many subscribers they have left???

Did anyone actually get Ch 423 free las fri & Sat ? I have an old sky box and I couldnt get Setanta on it. Have a friend who has a Freesat set-up and he couldnt get it either.

I had it for free. A Sky subscription was needed to see it.

You didn't heed a Sky subscription as I got it on my father-in-law's basic Sky box with FTV card. I also got it on my own Sky+ with subscription card (though not for Setanta but for Sky news/events pack). Saw first half of Leinster vs Ulster match on basic box and last quarter of match on Sky+! Channel was FTV not FTA as noted in above post #18 so could not be accessed on a Freesat box. AFAIK if your old sky box's card had expired channel wouldn't show up as it would only show FTA channels.

My €5 deal just ran out and got hit for €16.99 again. Cancelling tomorrow.

I'm in town every Friday night and 3pm Sat so not worth it.

Next year they have more EPL matches than ESPN as ESPN got there old **** deal... It will help them save up for 3 years and take sky down a step or two..

Seriously doubt the last statement. Loss of rugby is a big blow and remember it is Setanta Ireland now. They're not really a competitor to Sky anymore since collapse of UK arm.

They still only have the same 3pm games. If they have also lost the Magners League then what else do they have?

ESPN on the other hand have more than just Premier League football.

I think its very strange showing lots of re-runs of Top Gear and it supposed ot be a sports channel

On a slightly different note i saw an ad tonight on the Villa Liverpool match stating Sky Sports are showing the US PGA tour in 2010.

Eurosport had the rights bouth up from Setanta for the remainder of the 2009 season.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 28,128 ✭✭✭✭Mossy Monk

Yeah. The PGA announced it a few weeks ago. Shame it's gone from Eurosport but I don't think anyone expected that to be long term.

Yep, pulls in too many viewers for a station like Eurosport to hang onto the rights....

Sky have brakes constantly, does my head in - lets hope for lots of open feeds like last year.

If they do go that route will they be able to afford EPL rights I wonder?

One would wonder how much they are making in subscriptions via Sky against advertising

Watching the late night poker the other night & the advertising was exactly the same as it is in the states - every 10 mins, fairly lashing them out Setanta were.

I noticed that when I subscribed to them. It was very annoying.

didnt want to start a new thread but it looks like the end of Setanta Sports USA operation from the article below..... one of the founders moving to a newish company premium sports with pay per view on their horizon. fox sports to take over setanta usa is speculated.
