This might be a long shot but I'm wondering is there anyway of getting national and county championship results for back in the period of 1973-1975?
    Thanks

I can only suggest the obvious - AAI, or Irish runner, but it would be good to have a full list of national champions/winners over track/country/road online ...

AAI site has some all time stuff - actually this may be it??

    http://www.athleticsireland.ie/content/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/Outdoor%20ROH.pdf

and if memory serves me right one of the national cross country events in the last year had lists of cross country winners in the programme - could have been interclubs from santry this year?? sorry memory gone, definitely in one of them ...

Apologies for the confused nature of this post too much sherry.

just looking at this now its incomplete in some areas...I know Galway and Paul Donovan did win intercounties cross country circa 1986 - appears it has been erased from history... Terry mchugh national champion 1985-2004 javelin ..wow!!

I've done a fair amount of research in this area over the last few years and am a little sad to say that there are no comprehensive records any where that I've been able to find. The information hass just faded away in many cases. That such a situation exists at national level exists is sad, but it's even worse at county level. Ask yourself who keeps records of county championship winners these days. To my knowledge there is nobody currently keeping track of who wins what at county level within the AAI from year to year. This means unfortunately that in many counties if you win a senior championship this year that very quickly that championship win fades out of the collective memory. If you're lucky and you'll be in an area where your AAI county board are good at keeping and retaining records, but if not it's unclear whether it's possible to reconstruct a list of championship winners of even fairly recent times in some places.

The whole situation is also complicated by the existance of the NACA and AAU prior to 1968. Even after the merging of these two bodies in that year I believe the NACA continued to organise athletics in some places. As well as that factor there is the crossover between metric distances and imperial measurements. For example, for years both the NACA and the AAU held a national mile championships on the track, but at some point (late 60's) the focus shifted to the 1,500m. However, for a couple of years around the transition time I believe both the mile and 1,500m were contested.

I'm currently trying to compile a list of pre '68 NACA National Championship Cross Country winners at national level and Co. Galway XC champions from press clippings, but have also thought that some sort of collective effort or 'project' might be a better way to go. For the moment I'll bash away at my own research, but perhaps in the new year it might be time to launch 'The Irish Champions Project'.
