just wondering if people have any ideas what the commute out the M50 onto the N7 towards the midlands will be like on Christmas Eve....around 6pm or so?

I've done the N7 for several years on Christmas eve and whey-hey! it's all good.
Was coming from the southside for a few years and now from the city centre and it was quiet, would have been leaving around the 4pm mark.
Usually most people are gone by that stage so I would think you should be ok.

I will heading this way again this year but will be earlier in the day but not expecting much delay.

Actually by 6pm it wouldn't be too bad I don't think. Most people would have long gone by that stage. Not the same, but I got the last train out of Heuston (to Galway) a couple of years ago and it was very empty.

But if the weather is in any way bad or there a crash...

I'd say not too bad either. Already Dublin is feeling a lot quieter than last week, with a lot of students etc already gone. With most others finishing up work either a day early or early in the day on Christmas eve, by 6pm I'd say it'll be quieter than you'd expect. Actually by 6pm everyone'll be in the pub!

I imagine a good chunk of people will be finishing up on Wednesday evening, but I wouldn't be too complacent about it. If you're going to try leave Dublin on Thursday, I suggest you leave before 10am or after 8pm.
