I would be interested in getting people opinions on this. Are the two shanes , Quinn and Fitzsimons the two best prospects in Irish underage athletics at the moment. Obviously Ciara mcgeehan is the most promising female.

    Any opinions?

depends what you class as "underage"....
    do you mean junior yeh?
well then ciara mageean and shane quinn yes... although people like robinson and mcberty really showed themselves the last year or so... and at the moment they are faster than quinn.... but for his age shane quinn is probably the best male any way...ciara mageean is the most promising female without a doubt.

Based on previous debates we have had on kids even older than this they might be a bit young to be having such discussions.

I used to think it was ok to discuss but I suppose it might be better to let them breathe and enjoy their sport without putting too much expectation on ones so young.

Many of the ones so good that age are many times run into the ground and heavily trained so that when they hit late teens are maxed out and don't progress.

Obviously the three individual medalists (Mageean, Quinn, McMahon) from the EYOF are the standouts but the coming years will tell if it translates to junior/U23/senior for this talented trio.

I'd be for not even having this discussion even though I might have played a part in previous debates like this.

Agree 100%. By all means celebrate their successes. But discussing and dissecting young athletes on a public message board is not good. Let them continue to progress, or not, without being subject to random comment and criticism.

Good points made above, as the last thread on this topic didn't turn out too well, so let's keep it at 18+ if at all.

It's difficult to compare them with the runners mentioned below but it will be interesting to see how our foremost junior (just about) high jumpers get on next year, Kourosh Fouragi, Barry Pender and Catriona Farrell. All three have huge potential.

In terms of runners, it's hard to see past Brian Gregan as our most promising. Faster than Gillick at the same age and seems to have the determination.

    Has to be Kate Veale.

Breaking the junior records and she cant even race as a junior is Ireland yet (u16 in 2009). Her 5k time of 23:21 is amazing for her age and her 3k of low 13 is unbelievable totally in a class of her own showed her excellence in the schools international this is without mentioning she is a proven runner making schools x/c team

Folks, keep this to the older age groups please.

Kate Veale is 15, Caitriona Farrell is 17.

I think we need to let them compete for a couple of years more before we start championing them and creating expectation.

    Here we go again!

I saw a 7 yr old competing in a primary schools' cross country recently. He was brilliant, he must have won by at least 20 metres. I spoke to his coach, physio, biomechanist and agent afterwards. They are undecided whether to focus on the 200 metres in 2028 or go for the marathon in 2032.

Shane Fitz is 14, Kate is 15. They are good kids. Let them enjoy their childhood.

I didn'trealise that this was such a touch subject. i also didn't realise that Shane Fitz was only 14. Did he not win the Tailtean U17 last summer in close to 4 mins and run away with the U16 Cross in kilbeggan??

Kourosh is very exciting. He is a natural talent and a rare one. We had two rare ones before in Antoine Burke and Adrian O' Dwyer. It'll be interesting to see how he progresses.

Again, a rare natural talent. Already he is starting to look top drawer. This winter I think he has progressed again from where he was when he ran low 46 in the summer. Hardly underage at almost 20 but is the man to watch without a doubt.

Surely Kelly Proper's name should have popped up here by now. A serious talent.

Yes, we had a thread on the EYOF and it was touchy as regards putting too much pressure on them and I'll put my hands up as I was one of the biggest culprits. Kids that age have a long way to go. To think Turnbull ran 3:47 for 1500 when he was a youth, faster than all our great milers that came before him yet it could be argued he never fulfilled that promise. Its a rocky road on and off the track at that age!

I remember watching Shane Quinn at a munster juvenile cross country race a couple of years ago. I hadn't seen him before then. He was awesome, obliterated the rest of the field. Looked like the real deal, a super talent. Hopefully, he will continue to blossom in the years ahead.

He is without doubt an awesome talent but their are rumours about increadably high mileage, as well as bouts of galandular fever.

However 3:50 for 1500m is a fantastic springboard for anything and hopefully he will be provided with the support that he needs. Support that was denied to many of those that went before him.

Is this not a prime example of discussing/dissecting a kid who is under 18?

General thought to all - would it be an idea to put something formally in the charter that prohibits such discussions on 18 and under?

Ok guys, it's already been said that we're not going discussing U18 athletes' any more, so the thread will be locked if we can't manage it from here on in, LAST warning.

Apologies to all as I am not sure that he 18 yet but I feel compelled to make this point.

I think that he has been lost to the Premiership.

This is not helpful to a young athlete coming out with statements that are based on as you quote rumours. He is an extremely talented athlete more talented than anyone of that age in and it is unfortunate that athletes out of pure jealousy dare to critize his coaches training methods who actually is his father ( I think he knows best). Leave the lad alone he is not eighteen and let him enjoy athletics as it is he who will qualify for Rio 2016.

ok folks, you've been warned at least 4 times about discussing young athletes and you continue to do so. I'm closing this thread and if another opens, bans will follow.
