Were these in any way comparable to say a Peugeot 205 Gti back in the 80's?
Possibly they were just a 1.6 injection escort with a bodykit? My friend has a 1.6
205 GTi and fancys the escort as a nice 80's touch to addition to what he already has.

    Thanks

IMO the XR3i was a nicer car than the the 205GTi, but the GTi was def faster, the 1.9 version was quite quick... The XR3i was a fuel injected XR3, the XR3 was a 1.6 3 door escort with a couple of mods inside and outside. But it was more the status of these cars, I think, than the cars themselves. The hot hatch class was a whole different level of car on anything else that was there at the time.
I remember the first time I drove a MkI Golf GTi, some car to go.

The Xr3/XR3i were good looking handsome cars and had a nice spec for their time, but they do not compare well to a 205GTi, which were faster and had much sharper handling.

The original XR3 had pronounced postive camber on the front and negative on the rear and this was revised after about 2 years, which improved things quite a bit.

I havent seen a decent one, or an Irish reg's one in years.

    205 GTi better car than the XR3 i .........

although the ford is a good looking car , the peugot wins hands down ,better performance & better handling all round .

white xr3 in castledermot for sale , must see if i can get a pic the next day im passing.

XR3's came to Ireland in 1980 and 205 gtis in 1985 so bit of an age gap as far as build and design goes !!!!

He won't be buying an irish one, I mean how many original irish xr3's are about? It's been years since I seen an Irish plated car, must have been the late 90's the last time I saw one of these. Seems to be dozens in every county in the UK for sale with Mot's. They sell for little or nothing, £400- £1000 in good condition. Trip over in early january and bring one back on the boat. Would be pretty cool to see one of these on the road here, I believe Mark Hollis from the band "Talk Talk" use to drive a black one in the early 80's... Very cool:cool:

It's one of the few Fords I would love to own. Love them cars, has to be 100% original though

I have seen alot of chavved up examples on autotrader uk alright...avoiding them completely. An original mk3 xr3 would be great, a face lift mk4 xr3i with the fuel injection would be ok but the carb xr3 from 80' - 85' would be the one he is after..

When I was a young lad around Kilkenny in
the early eighties there was an XR3 doing the rounds, sunburst red, brown tinted glass,carburator,4 speed, the reg was 200 LIP.
Anyway about 2 years ago I was driving some of the back roads and there it was parked on the side of the road with no engine looking a bit sad but the body was still good.I had a chat with the guy, said he was going to restore it,must drop in again see how hes getting on.

That sounds great, hope he gets it's running and doing the back roads like you use to see them in the 80's
