Quick question

    I bagged my first pheasant this morning I'll upload a photo later. Can anyone tell me how long I should hang it for before I pluck and gut it.

    Well done, fine looking bird.

    Generally 4-5 days would be average hanging time. In this cold weather in a cool shed a bird could be hung for over a week without any problem. If it's earlier in the season and the weather is milder a bird can start to smell a bit (mainly around the entrails but still fine to eat) after 4-5 days. I'd usually pluck on a Thursday for anything I shoot on a Saturday/Sunday.

    Do a search on this forum and i'm sure you'll come across some more discussion on it.

    MMhhh very tasty looking bird, hang for a few days and safe all the hassle of plucking skin it, theres a link on a thread here somewhere to how to do it in a few seconds!!! I keep seeing the buggers around my house when I am out doing something else with no gun!!!

    Yeah I know what you mean I was out yesterday morning as well there were quite a few out but they were all in feilds with live stock. So I check it again this morning and got that chap in an empty field.

    ya was out yesterday myself and got 3 the hard weather must be bringing them out
    id agree with NO6 and skin it its harder pluck them and the skin is easy to rip

    how i skin them is make a small cut between its legs

    then tear the skin and pull back over the legs

    make a cut on the leg bone about half way between the joint in the middle of the leg and the hip and snap them

    then cut the tail off where it joins its bum

    the skin will pull off all the way to its wings

    then cut the wings off where the meet the body

    continue to pull skin upwards to head then cut neck off and thats it

    then to gut it go back to where ya started between the legs make a good cut there to remove the entrails remove everything

    then make a hole where the neck is this allows water in one end and out the other to flush it out and remove blood and the lungs are bright pink they can be tricky to remove because it breaks up

    Lovely bird, fair play. Still haven't get a pheasant the dog has been sick for the last 5 weeks. He will be fit for tuesday fingers crossed.

    If your gonna roast the bird id sugest plucking it! It takes a bit more time but i feel it`s worth it for flavour!!! Split an apple in four and fill the cavity of the bird with it, stops the bird from drying out!!
