Training in the Morning- Eat breakfast or not?

    So I'm training in the morning on the roads roughly 1:30. So I enjoy my sleep but try and get my training in early. So noramally i get up and have breakfast wait an hour then head out or warming up. So does anybody not have breakfast or do they just have a light snack. And if people have do the light snack do you not get hungry out training?

    No light snack for me, I get up early have a massive muesli and fruit and yogurt breakfast, then drive down to the shop for paper, quick read and a few cleaning jobs then I am off, I feel a bit sluggish from the food for the first few miles but its grand after 15 minutes or so.

    Ya i'm much the same I just scan boards waiting for the breakfast to settle but it just seems like a waste of time which could be better spent in bed

    If I'm running early in the morning, I have to have my porridge about an hour before I head out otherwise I'm just horribly hungry and I'll probably get dizzy.

    Different things suit different people though.

    I always eat a really light breakfast, then go straight out. Works for me cos im used to it. I never eat heavy first thing. Good water intake when training, and powerbar or gels if its a real long session are all i take otherwise. Hunger has never really been an issue. The only thing that would stop me on a run is thirst.

    My morning running routine has been the same for years. Bowl of porridge and a cuppa tea and toast. Usually head out within 20 mins of brekkie. Works for me.

    At the moment I'm content running two hours first thing in the morning fasted. I'll pop a gel or two after an hour.

    A well timed gel and proper fuelling the night before gave a lot to be said gor them. I find increased fuels in the belly require extra "pit stops".

    Personally I'm a fan of train low, race high though.

    Out of interest what do you mean "proper fuelling the night before"???

    Fair play getting 2 hours run in the morning, hard to fit an hour in before work never mind 2! :)

    glass of water and a bit of fruit will do me for anything up to 2 hours. usually have a gell at the half way point. i cant stand waiting for breakfast to settle if i want an early run. time isnt on my side here because once its 10.30 its way to hot for a long run.

    I'd have to have a proper feed a couple of hours before a run. Only time I'd really be running in the mornings at the moment though is races, can't be bothered going to that much effort in the AM otherwise.

    banana/toast then run then porridge is the norm for me.
    If I'm going for a long one then like ultraman I'll have my porridge last thing before bed the night before

    At one of the Dublin Marathon seminars a nutritionist recommended white bread and jam. Her reasons were the white bread processed quicker than the brown and the bit of jam gave a bit of a glucose kick first thing in the morning as your suger levels a lower at that time.

    +1, Anything up to 3 hours (at lowish intensity) in the morning I'll do with only a couple of BHAA's in my tummy. Mind you I'm trying to lose weight which is my main motivator for this.

    HM, can you confirm if you mean BHAAs or BCAAs? How easy are BHAAs to digest on a morning run?!

    I've recently started going out for runs first thing before breakfast, only 20 minutes thus far plus stretching time so not long enough to get hungry. Normally i'd need 2.5/3 hours after eating before running.

    I go out in the morning on both long & short runs without eating a thing. I don't get hungry at all, actually hunger doesn't even enter my mind.... I bet it will from now on though ....dammit !!:mad:

    Over the summer when I was starting my training runs around 5-5.30am I was up and out without a breakfast, maybe have a banana if I was feeling "empty"as I was getting my gear on and out the door. I`d have a good few miles done by the time I was awake and hunger never bothered me til nearer the end of the run, even on the 30 mile training runs I`d be around the 25 mile mark before I`d think about food - I think the running was a bit of an appetite suppressant anyway..
    I`d have had plenty of water and a decent dinner the previous evening though and have the bushes well stashed with drink a high5 mixed drink.
    I absolutely could not go to the trouble of getting up early and hanging around for my food to digest!! My brain would have connected then and I might not have the enthusiasm to get out and start into domestic chores YUK!
