Shooting the snow at night

    Hi
First off I must apologise for my inexperience, Im a complete amatuer so Im sorry if Im asking really basic questions everybody knows the answer to.
Anyway I was watching coverage of the snowfalls in England and some of those images were amazing looking, particularly the stuff shot at night or the dark of early morning. If it snows here Id love to be able to shoot some night snow shots. My camera is a manual one so no digital trickery im afraid, just old school photography.
What do I need to shoot snowscapes at night? More specifically, do I need a tr-pod, shutter release switchy thing, and what speed should I set the camera to? Oh and any special kind of film I should use?
    Cheers
