Ok, due to recent redundancy we at HS central have had to trim down on a couple of things, the biggest victim of this is my daily trip to the chipper...ahem sorry our 307 (Great run about TBH) which is going back to the bank.. *Thumbs*

Every cloud has a silver lining and I'm lucky enough to know of someone who has a 97 laguna 1.8 sitting in their drive way doing nothing... its completely free (Recently serviced, NCT'd etc)

There is one small problem with it (ahem), there seems to be an issue with the clutch, owner says (from talking to Renault mech), there is a known issue with this model and its "clutch rod" :) and that this rod just needs to be put back in place :) .. now I dont have a clue about clutch rods or anything mechanical, bearing in mind the car is free! and we are stuck.. does this sound right to the bangernomics experienced petrol heads.

Is there a decent renault mech warrior who could sort me out ?

anything for free is ok, if u dont mind repairing it

Imo you'd be better off spending €500 on something Japanese than taking a Laguna for free.

If You'll excuse the irony, 'Out of the frying pan, into the fire' (Chipper, 307, Laguna)!

I'd hunt down an auld mid/late nineties corolla or civic. Cheap as chips and will never let you down.

Tip: Have a look at notice boards in churches. I kid you not. Auld one's who have paid top whack for servicing and looked after their cars often stick them up for sale there. Won't have a clue what there worth.

    A bit off topic:
Got my hands on a one-owner 1988 Starlet with 68,000 miles off a church notice board; made a nice few shillings by punting it on to a muppet who was going to 'glanza' it up.

Better than a lot of the ****e you see on carzone and those dodgy looking outfits on the naas rd.

Avoid a Laguna. Worse than being tied to the tail of a heffer and scuttered to death.

You're a fan of the Mk1 Laguna then? You might be the only one here.

a good workman always blames his tools ( disciples in this case )....

    which raises two questions:

was Jesus a good carpenter ? ( yeah, he was a chippy )

    Are Jews tools ?

either way laguna's are better then the rep they get from the typical irish owner.

    From the link:
So many problems likely I can't recommend a Laguna 1 even as a cheap second-hand buy.

OP do you know any mechanically inclined people who could take a look for you? If its a clutch rod then its possible it could be located between the gearbox and the clutch pedal (ie. not inside the gearbox) so could possibly be a cheap and pain-free fix.

If the car is going for free then you have nothing to loose by taking it to a garage if needed just to find out the cost of fixing. If its too much then you cut your losses, if its cheap enough you've got yourself a nice big comfy car for peanuts.

I have no idea what you're talking about, I'm going to attribute it to the lateness of the hour...

Please keep to topic and leave Jesus and the Jews out of it please.

i had one of these a 1998...gave me endless problems which cost a fortune to get right...i could have just got a bad car but i'd never buy another after it

I used to have a Megane Coupe and nearly every week (no joke) I had a new problem with it, awful cars - nice to look at but not to drive!

Back on topic: Is this a Diesel or Petrol Laguna? Our family has had a diesel 1.9 for a few years now and it seems reliable enough hardly ever any probs. Ive heard diesel cars are hardier than petrols... But if its petrol stay well away and spend what ya have on a Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda or Mazda.

I myself bought a 00 Almera a year ago - not much to look at but havent had to do ANYTHING to it since -- not even add oil to her! Reliable out.

i drove a 1.8 1995 laguna for 3 years bar servicing all i had to do with it was a waterpump , only got rid of it because it got a bad bang on the back ,it covered 80,000 miles when i had it ,years later i bought a 02 laguna and it didnt give me any trouble but it wasnt as nice to drive as the original one

I think I'd want a fresh NCT on it before offering anything for it.

Haven't had a chance to look at it over the Christmas, just getting some ideas for plan B if the laguna doesen't work out.

I was driving a mk1 laguna a few weeks back when my gearbox was being fixed. For a ten year old car with 150k up on it everything worked bar the alarm fob, it did almost 1000 miles for me without using a drop of oil, drove smoothly and was comfortably for hours behind the wheel. I wouldn't discount one straigt away. I was asking the guy in the gearbox place about it. It's ragged to death by everyone that gets it as a courtesy car and he's never had to do a thing to it. He bought it needing a clutch two years bin

I don't think the MkI Laguna was a bad car, I think it gets alot of discredit because of it's successor's image.

No , sorry. I hav'nt had to fix anything on any of our cars I couldnt do myself (I mean routine work like brakes, serviceing and a scenic with the dodgy lights where the indicator and fog light were lighting at wrong times before anyone suggests I've been sticking a fleet of constantly breaking Renaults together with sticky tape) . For timeing belts and the like I use the brother of a guy I know thats a Renault mechanic in Blanchardstown Renault, but he's not all that cheap. I'm on the lookout for a Re nault indy myself tbh for things like that, otherwise I might end up breaking one when I try a TB :) .

I'm in a huff now btw:)

Ah dont be like that! ;) I think its the clutch cable anyway and by the sounds of things its a simple enough fix.. should be around 100 euro to get right.

You won't need a Renault indy for that ;)
