Police brace for Black Eyed Friday
Dec 18 2009 by Julie Watt, Dumfries Standard Friday

EXTRA police will be deployed across Dumfries and Galloway tonight as pubs and clubs prepare for one of their busiest nights of the year.

Police chiefs say they will take a hard line against any revellers who turn trouble-makers on the notorious so-called Black Eye Friday.

The night, the final Friday before Christmas, has in the past been marred by drink-fuelled violence and disorder as people cram into pubs and clubs to celebrate finishing work for the festive holidays.

Police are desperate to avoid last year’s festive tally of nearly 450 people who ended up behind bars at some stage over the festive period.

Police are hoping to tackle and deter any potential problems with high-visibility patrols to ensure people respect each other, drink sensibly and stay safe.

Chief Inspector Alan Glendinning, operational commander for the Dumfries division said: “People have to recognise the dangers that are associated with drinking too much alcohol and all we ask is that people remember this.

“Take responsibility for your own actions and plan your evening.”

He also urges revellers to make travel arrangements and to keep their eye on the weather.

He added: “Consider travel arrangements to and from your night out, consider the weather at this time of year as we are currently experiencing plummeting temperatures, especially late at night or in the early hours.

“Most of all, consider how much you are drinking and your resultant behaviour. Enjoy yourself without spoiling the enjoyment of others.”
    Never heard of it myself?
