If you're putting in, say, €40 of petrol, and you go over the amount by a few cents, (which is easy to do), should you have to pay the extra?

    Of course.
Who put the petrol in the car? You did.
Who should pay for the petrol you put in the car? You should.

    It's not difficult to understand.

No.. you should get free petrol.. infact overfill by €20 next time and tell them it was an accident... /facepalm

Some stations are nice and let you off but its upto the attendant really whether its worth the hassle or not

Let me guess! You over filled by a few cents and didn't have any change and begrudge paying for all the fuel you put in your vehicle.

Take a hoespipe next time and suck it back!

I used to work in a petrol station. I never gave a fiddlers sh!te until people went about 5 or 6cent over, that was just deliberate.

The amount of people who would get 19.98 when they meant to get 20 was huge tho.

Some of them aren't easy to get right, that's the problem. I have said this to the garages in question and they have tended to agree with me and said that its' a common complaint and I don't mind paying the extra few cents at all.

BTW I used to work as a pump attendant when I was at college for a small garage, so I have plenty of practise.

He did, in a roundabout way, hoping that we would say "no" you can have a few cents for free!

It's not that stupid.. I'd be annoyed if I was asked for 2cent on top of 50euro.

Doesn't mean it's right or wrong, it would just be annoying.

most of that extra few cent is going to the government anyway, apply for it next time you're claiming tax back

It's never been an issue since I pay by Laser every time I get petrol..

FFS talk about jumping to conclusions!! I simply asked the question as I thought about it again last night as I in the garage and wanted to know what other people thought.
He did, in a roundabout way, hoping that we would say "no" you can have a few cents for free!

Yea, that few cents will get me far!!

If you're doing shopping and a packet of biscuits fall into your basket by accident(which is easy to do), should you have to pay for them??

You already do pay. It's built into the price. Like pens from the bookies. Little shampoos from the hotel. Glasses from the pub. Cutlery from the restaurant.

Most pumps have a device that speeds up every time the customer approaches a round number (10.00,15.00 etc.).
When they have then sped past the initial round number they had selected a lot of people will then continue pumping petrol to reach the next round number ,satisfying peoples odd desire for zeros after a number (as evidenced by the self-congratulatory threads when someone here reaches a 1000 posts etc.).
It's just another nasty little psycological trick the oil companies play on us.

I never get charged for going 2 or 3 cent over if paying with cash, but if I pay with the laser card they always charge for it even 1 cent.

I kinda have a limit. Over 4 cent and I'll pay the extra, under and I dont bother. I did get asked for 20 euros and 1 cent by some girl working in a petrol station in the middle of no where once, the only time any of them ever seamed bother.

OK, let me re-phrase the question. If a retail outlet are supplying a machine for self serving their produce, and this machine is very hard to operate to an accurate level, should the consumer be penalized?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,537 ✭✭✭✭Cookie_Monster

since we're on the subject why is petrol/diesel the only commodity allowed to be sold with XXX.9 of a cent?

Why do they not have to display full "real" currency numbers?

Of course you should. Just cos you don't slow down the pump near the end doesn't mean you should get free petrol.

Used to work in a petrol station and some people would go over by a bit e.g. €20.15, run in, drop a twenty on the counter and fly out the door before you get to knock off the amount from the pump. The employee's till is now 15c down for the shift by that one customer. The extra cents over add up over the course of a shift, and then you have to explain to your supervisor why your till is a couple of euro down, and if that happens to every till on every shift, it adds up to serious bobs, and you could get an official warning for not balancing your cash regularly.

It might only seem like a few cents to you, but if you're not the only one doing it, it adds up.

Why can't you just pre-select, after entering your card, how much you want?

Worked in a petrol station for years and pumped many a litre of fuel and still go a cent or 2 over every now and again. It was never any big deal. People would just throw you a note and you'd leave it at that. Did ask one guy for 6 cent though. There's no way the pumps were that irresponsive.

If you pay by card the amount on the till just goes straight to the machine, or the older set ups the credit card statement has to match the till statement exactly or it's a serious issue. So you'll never get away with it by card.

So if you go through 20 a week and go 3 cent over = €1.56 a year extra petrol. Driving for 50 years of your life = €78 of free fuel! Makes sense to do it, but only if you're in for the long haul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,771 ✭✭✭jebuz

Why don't they just have a little keypad where before you start pumping the petrol, you dial in your max spend e.g 40.00, and then you can pump away while looking around and what not and when it reaches 40, the machine knocks off and everybody wins.

    QA-f*cking-D!

Old style pumps  in my foreign land we use electronic pumps, and they do all the figuring right onto my debit card. I couldnt steal one red cent if i tried.

Of course you should. Just cos you don't slow down the pump near the end doesn't mean you should get free petrol.

Read my posts properly FFS. I do slow down the pump near the end and I don't want free petrol, I just want the pumps to be easy to use, which some of them aren't. Last night I stopped at €39.98, and found it very hard to pump in the extra 2 cents. Most of the pumps are very sensitive in that when you release pressure they slow down to a manageable rate, which is fine, but some are really bad and impossible to slow down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,659 ✭✭✭CrazyRabbit

I'd prefer if you could select the amount on the pump and it would dispense just that amount. Means we wouldn't have to start there looking at the counter and trying to get it spot on €20, €50 etc...

Just to piss everyone off, my bike is so fuel efficient, I only used €8 worth of petrol per week :p

So just stop at 39.98 and let the shop have the 2 cents, that ever occur to you, or throw it in the charity box.

Again, missing the point. Not about the money at all. And the place where I was last night I wouldn't give them the steam off my piss as they are so expensive and overcharge for other stuff. I give enough to charity and do usually drop in change to soem of the boxes.

Agree with the posts saying to enter in your amount and then dispense that amount. Technology is there, easy to do.

I'm disturbed that some posters feel as though this is stealing.

The problem with that is that a lot of people just want to fill up their tanks not be worried about 2 cent here or there.

Also what happens if you pay for €40 but your tank is full after putting in €35?

I assume if you go under, it charges your card appropriately, but stops you going over.
