John Foley has been confirmed as the full-time CEO of AAI after the board meeting on Wednesday. The vibes from his interim period is one of general positivity with bridges being built and progress being made in certain areas. I was all positive before when Mary Coghlan came him but she was pushed out by the 'old fart' syndrome but hopefully Foley can root out the bad stuff and let the good stuff keep doing the good stuff they are doing up and down the country.

Anyway, if you were sitting on John Foley's knee and he was Santa, what would you ask for this xmas for the year ahead in relation to Irish athletics.

Big Present: A complete overhaul of the competition structure. From how its run on the day, to how its structured, to what its trying to achieve for underage, jun/U23, senior, to making our events more exciting and appealing to kids/competitors/fans. So not just the entry process or how its run on the day but how we can use competition to further the sport. Its the cornerstone of the sport.

Surprise Present: Bring in a Director of Athletics or Coaching who will put proper structures and templates in place. Someone young (or old) guy (or gal) who is hungry and probably sees this as a stepping stone in their career to bigger and better things. If they can come in for even 2 or 3 years and totally shake it up. Someome who will coach the coaches on how to coach their athletes.

If we had those in 12 months, I'd be happy.

To avoid a lump of coal would be enough- no more infighting/court cases/selection wrangles

I think the tangible outputs should be along the lines you suggest, Tingle. But the main issue he has to address is the toxic combination of corruption and incompetence. And that is as much the responsibility of Congress as it is the CEO. We need an executive which is independent of the politics of the Board, chosen for its competence only. And key to that will be the CEO taking on the interference from the Sports Council. Given that he couldn't be appointed without the Sports Council's approval it will be interesting to see, now that he has the position (was it ever advertised by the way?) whether he will face down the incompetence of that qaurter, particularly in the HP area.
