I had an earlier version of this printer and it gave good service but to anyone considering buying this printer I'd suggest you check out the cost of ink cartridges they are not cheap....;)

Only when you do a TCO will you know that, cartridges are normally horrendous prices for Lexmark

Thats why I love my Brother MFP and my Xerox colour laser printer :D

Although the Xerox is hard to find non-oem carts for, its quality is superb!

All valid points but thankfully shouldn't have much bearing on what it's needed for with us.

Well, my dad has a small HP laser which he uses for most printing.

The MFP will primarily be for photocopying with some scanning and the odd colour print. And ink will be bought from recycled centres. Actually, if anyone has any good suggestions for reliable good quality third party inks, I'm all ears.

The words touch and Bargepole spring to mind.
Might be cheap to buy but its a false economy, they cost a fortune to run.

OP thanks for your sincerity and good intentions in posting & no offence for the following but couldn't let a Lexmark recommendation pass....

Lexmark Printers are in my opinion absolute junk - they must be designed in the dark, assembled by blind Kids and tested with all the attention to detail of the Financial Regulator.

    - That and the fact that it'll cost ya €999.99 in ink for the 13 months lifetime before it explodes in your face.

So if a Lexmark is expensive to run then which ones (brands/models) are economic yet reasonable quality?

There's a HP Photosmart Premium C309a reduced also I noticed:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Photosmart-Premium-Printer-Bluetooth-Printing/dp/B001T9NFTY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1261526670&sr=1-1
with Amazon themselves selling it for stg£127 inc postage (or £140 with faster delivery)

Reviews are up and down but generally positive, tempting considering the functions in one unit eg:
    http://www.testfreaks.com/multi-functional-printers/hp-photosmart-c309a/

The printing & scanning quality seems well rated while the add-on features(fax, CD printing) are at the basic end.
Not bargain of the century prob but an option I'd say.

I have 2 printers had home, a black and white HP laserjet 1018. Brilliant printer, very fast and the toner cartridge could last u a whole year. Perfect really as 80/90% of the stuff i want to print off doesn't need to be in colour. So for the occaisonal colour printout or picture i use a canon can't remember the exact model off hand but is a C3000 series with a built in scanner too.

I use these all the time for ink for my canon printer - cheapest I have found yet, free postage from Jersey.

Well, I've learned my lesson :(

Printer is a dud. Can't connect by usb. Have tried multiple cables/computers to no avail. It can photocopy etc but cannot connect. USB port must be dead.

And when I opened the packet of the included black ink, I had to deal with a mess because the cartridge was leaking.

So, as per the million and one warnings above, avoid Lexmark like the ****ing plague.
    :(
