Tights/capris - what do you wear under them?

I just bought a pair of Nike capris (6 euro on their site! - use 'GIFT' coupon code to get free shipping) and, while trying them on, I got to thinking about what underwear to wear with them.

When wearing cycling shorts or running shorts I don't wear underwear, but for tights I always wear cotton underwear. It doesn't feel right.

So, what do others wear under tights or capris?

(Aside, FYI, these capris are quite thick, designed for the cold).

Normally I'd apply the Scotsman-in-a-kilt rule and wear nothing. If they're a bit saggy though how about a pair of lycra shorts underneath?

I don't like no cotton, me! Grr!

Pennys were selling sports jocks. They are some lycra type underwear but not too tight. They are also seamless so you won't get any nasty chaffing

I have a couple of pairs of running shorts that are too small for "external" use but are great for exactly this. For races I therefore wear 2 x pairs of running shorts, works a charm

    Hey Daymobrew,
Thanks for posting that bargain. Tell me are those nike leggings the ones that just go over the knee or all the way to the socks? Thanks.

yeah I'd wear nothing under leggings myself. Although I did that the other day and got a bit of chaffing due to poorly fitted leggings. Next time I'll use body glide.

Cheers for that Daymo - there's also a running top in there for €6 - only available in large. Result!

Just over the knee. The top (waist) and bottom (bit below knee) bands are thick. Nice mesh panel behind the knee.

BTW, the other capris on the site (listed under Tights) are the Nike Sphere style. They are £24.50 on the UK site but e55 on the Irish site  I emailed Nike to explain this but no reply after 7 days.

I say cotton/lycra (92%/8%) briefs today for 5 euro. More cotton than I think would be good.
Are these the ones you mean?

Got the tights, and was *very* surprised at how good I felt in them, never thought I was into that sort of thing...

Maybe cotton jocks underneath would curb my excitement, but they are certainly supportive enough, if a bit revealing. I'll wear these tights under running shorts. Top is good quality too, great value for €6 each.

Sorry if I've put anyone off their dinner.

I'm either L or XL depending on the top, in this case I got the XL, slightly big, and might have got away with the L (6'2")

Thanks, think i'll go with the XL better to be safe.

My two pairs of capris arrived yesterday. Ordered them in Small as that was the only size they have left when I was ordering, and I wear their shorts in small. They're very tight, and looks like Mrs Peckham now has two pairs of capris available to her - all she needs to do now is take up running!

I find running for over 60 minutes in tights leads to chaffing if one does not wear shorts underneath them. Anyway I have wore shorts all days this week toughens ya up and makes you look hardcore not as you can guess I care what the ordinary joe soap in the street may think of me.

are the reflective stripes on your tops printed on the inside of the arm rather than the outside? That must be a mistake, possibly why they were so cheap?

Ok I got a pair of the Nike capris along with a running top as they were so cheap (€6ea) but having never worn them before I now realise I'm a bit bashful :o about wearing them! I'm also not sure what their specific function is and I feel like a bit of a pontz . No disrespect to anyone ;).

Are they intended just to keep you warm? Are they a type of compression garment? Are they a fashion statement? Are they for track sessions? Are they suitable for longer runs? Are they for men?!? I usually wear shorts in all weather so I'm perplexed as to why / when I would wear them as they seem slightly restrictive.

I think I know what you mean.
Like wearing a bicycle helmet, I try not to think how I look when the capris.
They do keep me warm, especially the knees, which would be exposed in shorts. My calves don't seem to need the coverage. I find the capris less restrictive than my full length tights.

They are not a compression garment.

I remember years ago, I swore blind that I would never own a mobile phone. I have since owned 6 of them. So it was with my running. I swore I would never:
    Run in very public places
    Wear shorts
    Wear knee-high compression socks
    Stop for an emergency pikey-poo
    Wear day-glo clothes

Take a piss during a race without stopping
    Wear anything that contained lycra
    Learn to snot-rocket
    Wear capris
    Wear running tights
    Wear a head-torch

It's only a matter of time before I complete the list. :D
Life's too short to worry about what other think (though I did have around 10 knackers chase me with my head-torch the other day (like moths to a flame)). The capris are warm, but not as warm as the tights. I wear the tights when doing a recovery run and it's +3'C to -4'C, and the capris when doing an aerobic run in weather in the same temperature range. For tempo or intervals, I wear as little as possible!

    LOL :D

Perfect answer, thank you very much. I'm not too worried what others think and MrsB even thinks I look rather fetching in them ;) but I didn't think I could honestly answer the question 'Why are you wearing them?'.
