Installing Game/Updates

Hows it going all, just wondering when everyone here buys a new game, comes home and puts it in and has to install it into the PS3, how long does it take on average to install? Also, when having to install updates for a game or even do a System Update for the PS3 itself, how long would this normally take everyone?

Then if anyone knows, what determines how long this takes? Your PS3 itself? Internet connection? The game?

Just wondering because whenever I've to install a new game it takes a ridiculously long time, about 8/9 hours or so, usually just leave it over night. Same story with updates and system updates really.

What? 8/9 hours to install a game?

    Something is clearly wrong there.

For example some of the biggest ones I can think off are Fallout 3 and MGS4 and they take nowhere near that time to install. Oblivion is a 5gb install and it does it while you are playing.

Updates seem to take longer on some wireless connections.

What do you mean by 'installing the game'? You can't download a game from the disc onto the PS3.

To answer your question about game and system updates, for me it usually takes 5-10 minutes for a game update, 15 for a system update

game installs normally run around the 5-20 min mark.

updates depend on your connection speed and the amount of people trying to download it at that time. For me on a 7mb connection about 5 mins.

When you buy a new game you have to install it or programme it into the PS3? Still need the disc to play it though.

Its only a part of the game that gets installed plus not all games do it unfortunately.

I think my definition of 'installing' the game was different to the one you meant. Never mind me, carry on :)

Anyone know where I would be able to get it checked though? Not very old, bought it about end of January 09. Not as if I have loads of stuff on it either, only have about 5 games or so.

less games are doing this now as developers are getting better at optimizing their games
installing was a cheat on their part to improve speed.

what game did you get that time with and what internet connection do you have.

Most games would be in and around that time (at the very least about 6 hours), but I believe that exact time was Fight Night Round 4, currently as we speak I'm installing updates for Burnout Paradise and after about 4 hours its halfway through, unreal.

Not sure what internet connection I have to be honest, I'm with Gaelic Telecom wireless broadband.

Just after doing an internet connection test there with McAfee; got 20kbps, now I'm no expert but SURELY that is unbelievably slow for broadband no??

Its not some mobile usb stick style broadband is it?

Just looked it up, maybe you are on the 1mb package?

If you can try and use a wired connection to see if it improves things.

Your internet speed wouldn't be affecting your installs though - they are just taking the inofrmation of the disc.

Again, an install is the PS3 ripping info to the HDD from the BR disc to ease loading times etc whilst an update is added to a game online to essentially patch/fix/add new features.

If you afren't connected to the net then you don't have to update by the way.

With those speeds I doubt you play online much so I wouldn't even bother downloading game updates and just play offiline.

As for installs I would expect them all to be fairly uniform. Usually take 5-10mins, now I don't have the biggest catalogue of PS3 games so that's just an average of the handful I do have.

seems its more the patches that are holding you up than the actual initial installing of games so to speak. id disconnect the ps3 from broadband, play the games away from their discs until your new ISP is set up....:)

btw you must be one patient person 20mins for MGS nearly drove me mad waiting

Okay thanks for all the help guys, I'll be in touch with Gaelic Telecom over the next few days and try get something done about this as it seriously is doing my head in, especially when I read how much quicker it should be

Not sure what I'm on tbh, but wouldn't be surprised if this was the one as it sort of rings a bell and would possibly explain why its been so slow.

Hmm, so when I'm installing games its a different problem altogether? Any idea what could be the cause of that?
