Asked to leave Aldi

A while ago, a few friends of mine and myself were in an Aldi in Cork. We were down for the weekend and looking to buy some breakfast that morning.
As we walked around the place, store security came up to us and asked us for ID, as they had a "no under-18s unaccompanied" rule.
Two of us had ID but the others didn't. He asked us to leave the store. We didn't want to make a scene, so we did.

No doubt they do this to stop groups of teens hanging about in Aldi, but we didn't exactly look dodgy - we weren't wearing tracksuits and baseball caps.

Anyway, is this legal? Are they allowed to discriminate on grounds of age like this?

Yes, it is legal, as far as I'm aware. It's private property, so they can impose any entry requirements.

I wouldn't get hung up on the legalities here...the answer is yes probably its fine sort of.

What jumped out at me was that two of your mates produced ID - I was just wondering if either was 18...if so...nobody present was an unaccompanied under 18...just something to be clever and annoying about should it happen again.

Aldi have that policy in place.

Under 18 & no adult = No entry... Blanket policy. No discrimination.

Aldi is a licensed premises. They by law must exclude under 18's.

So is Tesco's althought I often see school children in Tesco, unaccompanied, buying their lunches.

I think Tescos and Dunnes are different as the alcohol is separated from the main grocery section.

I am sure an expert on licensing law will explain.

They`re German,of course they`ll have a sign up,but it will only be an abbriviated version of a much bigger sign which they will happily print out for you if you have a cardboard box large enough to hold it in !

Genrally you`ll find their policies to be sorta black and white, take it or leave it......Guess its why Germany aint totally fcuxked and we are ??

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.

There's no rule in law that says under 18's can't be present in a licenced premises. They can't be served alcohol.

It's illegal for an under 18 to be in an off-license at all, unless it's with a parent/guardian. I'm not sure how it works though for a mixed premise like aldi/tesco.

It's illegal for an under 18 to be in a bar or other licensed premises after 9 pm, even with a parent or guardian, unless it's a restaurant (ie 'substantial meal').

To the OP, age discrimination only applies for 18+. Per the equal status act: "Treating a person who has not attained the age of 18 years less favourably or more favourably than another, whatever that other person's age, shall not be regarded as discrimination on the age ground."

    True,
    http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/justice/criminal-law/criminal-offences/alcohol_and_the_law
    Off-licences

Off-licence sales of alcohol is only permitted between the hours of 10.30 am and 10.00 pm on weekdays and 12.30 pm to 10.00 pm on Sundays.
It is illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to be in an off-licence, unless he or she is with a parent or guardian and all off-licences must display a sign to this effect. The sign must be in a prominent place at all times and failure to have such a sign on display can result in a fine of up to €25.40 for a first offence and €63.50 for a second and all subsequent offences. If an off-licence owner is found guilty of allowing under people under 18 onto his or her premises, he or she can be fined up to €381 for a first offence and €635 for a second and any subsequent conviction. People under 18 can themselves be fined up to €63.50 if they are found in an off-licence without a parent or guardian.

isnt an off licence not supposed to be sealed off when outside licencing hours?
if they were there before 1030 then there really shouldnt be a problem as they were accompanied by the two with ID
