Acer Aspire laptop

I bought an acer aspire 5738Z in August and initially it was terrific. For the last month it has started crashing and freezing, blue screen of death etc. I've done upteen virus scans with different software and the laptop is clean. I've also used ccleaner and advanced systemcare to no avail. I did a system restore also.

Now I can only use the laptop in safe mode and eventually it crashes even in safe mode but not as immediately as in normal mode.

Should I use the e recovery disks now or are there other steps I should take first?

Use the recovery discs, and if that doesn't work take it back. It's still under warranty so you may as well use it while it's still there.

Thanks for the advice. I did as you say and so far it seems to have resolved the problem.

Great. Test it as much as possible if you can just to be sure to be sure.

The problem seemed to start before with some error problem with windows media 11. It started the crashing and it spread from there. I'm reluctant to even open that programme but I suppose I should before replacing all my files and programmes.

I would open everything and test the hell out of the laptop while its still under warranty. Better off making sure it not not a hardware fault before the warranty is up because if you find one after the warranty expires, your boned.

It may seem pretty obvious too, but the shop/website that sold you the laptop is the one who is obliged to fix it/give you a refund.

I had a similar problem before and the shop in question tried to fob me off to the actual manufacturer (Acer in your case). Went on for around a month. In the end I had to send a solicitor's letter to the shop in order to get a full refund on it. They were pretty sharpish with the refund then.

Argos have already told me that they will replace it if it fails. People advised me not to buy there but I've always found that they will replace any faulty item within a year of purchase without question so I like buying such products from them rather than having to go cap in hand to argue with smaller suppliers.

Well that was a short lived fix. I woke up this morning to find the laptop had decided to pop it's clogs entirely during the night. Wouldn't even load explorer.exe. I brought it back to Argos in Swords and since they didn't have any in stock I got my money back - €550. Fairplay to Argos. They know hoe to treat customers.

Sadly they didn't have anything to match the spec for the price so I had a look in PC World. They have a deal going where you can bring in a old laptop and trade it in for €110 of a new one. Had a chat with the guy behind the technical service desks and he claims the brand he sees coming back the least for repairs is HP (other than apple. He's never seen an apple back for repairs - *sigh* I 'd love an apple.) I'll head back with an old banjaxed laptop and pick something up.

That's gas - the laptop I had all that hassle with was a HP.

I read on some other thread that there are a lot of terms and conditions to that PC World offer. Your old laptop has to be in perfect working order before they will offer part-exchange for it.

I live around the corner from Argos in Swords, have brought a fair few things back and they never have a problem changing anything! Nice people.

However, the deal in PC World in Airside, Swords, is that the laptop must be in full working condition and I think it's only up to €110 or whatever the trade in price is.

I had two HP laptops in the last few years, both gave up before the warrenty was out (i.e. the second was to replace the first). I just took my money back the second time, pure junk. I use a dell now and had the exact same problems as you described above. Someone advised me to remove Norton and it fixed the problem immediately. What antivirus do you use out of interest? I now use avast and have had no problems since.

I always uninstall Norton. causes way to many problems. I find avg or avast fine and presently I'm trying avira.

I just bought a Toshiba. Hope I have better luck with this one.

That other thread was mine - I discovered it was a terms and conditions scam when I tried to avail of the offer.
