I'm heading for NY in the morning for my office christmas party.
I managed to buy an unactivated iphone 3g for myself 18 months ago
from an Apple store when the store was busy.

I'm looking to get a couple of unactivated 8GB 3Gs to unlock for christmas
presents. Anyone know anywhere in NY I have a good chance of picking
    these up?

will just have to wait till march and get one in Auz from my cousin.

Try the apple store it won't hurt and they are worth the trip but it's doubtful you'll leave with several iPhones let alone one iPhone without contracts tied to them.

Your best bet is to do a bit of googling for independent phone stores. I was over there in august and there was one I saw selling unlocked iPhones about 1/2 a block south of the empire state. Sorry I can't be a bit more specific but I was drunk.

If I remember correctly they were **** expensive like talking $800 expensive.

i seen these stores too, while they are in respectable locations such as 5th Avenue etc, you would want a good eye to spot the fakes. i seen "advertised" iPhones, unlocked for international use but looked fairly dodgy as in they just didnt look right. i just didnt want to take the risk tbh.

if you know what to look for exactly, then you can have a look and route out the genuines from the fakes.

Yeah... I know about the $800+ ones. They are Factory unlocked.
What I want to get my hands on are the standard unactivated & locked units.
I have no problem unlocking the phones myself, I'd just prefer to pay the at&t
subsidised $99 per phone rather than $800 for the same phone.

I'm going to head out in the morning to start looking. I'm 2 blocks from
5th avenue atm. I'll try the apple store and give some sob story to explain
why an iphone gift card won't suffice for my sick grandma...
