New Wheels-new casette

Hi, I have a question for all you cyclists/triathlethes!
Recently bought a new sew of wheels for my specialised allez, ( Planet x 50mm tubular) and with new wheels comes a new casette. Ive been have trouble deciding what casette to buy. Ive been searching the internet but to be honest i dont understand all the gearing jargon, as in 12-21 etc! What do these numbers mean and what would be the best set up to go with??

Also, i have a granny ring set up although i never use it. Would it be worth getting rid of this as i will be using my bike mainly for triathlon/Timetrial.
    Any help is much appreciated.

If you're getting a new cassette you might need a new chain too!! The smaller number is the number of teeth on the smallest cog while the large number is the number of teeth on the largest cog. If the range on your old cassette was suitable then I'd go with the same again.

If you're changing cranks you will have to get a new bottom bracket too and maybe a new front mech, or you might get away with adjusting the limit screws.

You might get a swap on the cycling forum if you post it up, and you'll definately get better answers to this question there too!!

    Some background first:

    * How strong are you on the bike? What would be your best 40km TT time? (recent time)
    * You mention a granny ring - do you have a triple?
    * What races and distances are you targetting?
