    Well there wasn't a thread.
There was discussion in other threads, but nothing like this.

This is not just about SOS. This is showing that the Irish can be portrayed on television as something other than a leprechaun, a drunk or an idiot.

I don't remember marking out like this since I saw Scott Hall debut on WCW.
I actually cheered as I watched Cena go through the table, and I was on my own at the time.

Finlay is awesome. He is behind the scenes working as a trainer to some of the newest champions, but he never held a decent title himself.
Then there's hornswaggle. Supposed to be a leprachaun and basically an insult to Irish people.
SOS came along and broke the stereotypes and won the title. Like him or not, he's an Irish hero.

    Hail Sheamus.

He is undoubtedly the man to lead the nation out of this recession and into a bright new future.

I look forward to the inevitably cringeworthy Late Late Show appearance.:(

I actually cheered out loud when Cena went through the table aswell, what a great moment!

Has anybody seen anything written about him in the papers at all?

Not a mention in the evening herald or the 'Irish' mirror yet as far as I could see anyways
kind of annoying that those two x-factor muppets got page after page of attention but not a word about sheamus!

Has there been media coverage of his "win"? Usually Irish people and a lot of people flock to any morsel of "success" anyone Irish gets - remember the cricket phenomenon?!

Same kinda goes with actors and the like doesn't it?

It ain't front page stuff but RTE have reported worse.

I think it is certainly front page material! Here we have an Irish person winning the WWE title. Apart from going back in time and beating a hogan or a stone cold at WM it doesnt get a whole lot bigger than this.

Even just as a success story it news worthy. If an Irish person went from playing american football for a local team in Ireland to being quarter back of the winning side at the superbowl in 3 years then I would have just as much respect.
Both massive sports with little participation in Ireland. This is a massive achievment.

The Irish media are probly just a bit too snobby to cover it
I know wrestling is not a sport but if an Irish person won American Idol or some other entertainment show in the states im sure it would be plastered all over the papers but because its only pro-wrestling its not important..

    Irritates me quite a bit!

I haven't watched wrestling in years but I turned over to the ppv channel the other night because there was nothing else on so I caught the Cena v Sheamus match and when they showed the build up to the match I lmfao lol. I now have an interest in wrestling again because we now have an Irish champion :D might not be for long though.

    All Hail Sheamus :D.

In relation to this, how refreshing would it be if S(h)eamus turned up on the Late Late and gave a well-delivered, kayfabe free, non-WWE style interview free of condescending ignorance from Tubridy or the studio audience. I'd love that.

EDIT: Also, if Sheamus ever checks in here (and he very well might) WHAT an achievement! Unreal.

YOU wait years for a Brit or Irishman to win a championship in the WWE — and then two come along at once.
Sheamus made history at last night's Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view by becoming the first ever person from the UK or Ireland to win the company's world title.

He did something that not even Davey Boy Smith, Fit Finlay or William Regal could achieve.

And the TLC initials of the event had a double meaning, also standing for Three Lost Championships, as Scot Drew McIntyre won the intercontinental strap and Triple H and Shawn Michaels picked up the unified tag belts.

Needless to say, it was the victories for Sheamus and Drew that made us most proud.

The two men spent many years as mainstays of the wrestling scene over here, and we feared that they would not be used correctly when being picked up by WWE.

But fortunately they have survived the somewhat hit-and-miss developmental system and let their natural talent do the talking.

Both are young men with massive futures in front of them.

McIntyre bested John Morrison in a fun Intercontinental title match early in the show before Sheamus shocked many by cleanly beating John Cena to take the WWE crown from around the waist of the leader of the Cenation.

Cena has been virtually untouchable for years, and many expected Sheamus to be another monster fed to Raw's top dog.

The build up was all about Sheamus, with him putting the champ through a table — to the delight of guest GM Jesse Ventura — and dominating last week's host Mark Cuban.

Still, this often just means more of an obstacle for Cena to overcome — but not this time.

The only downside was the match itself. It was far from a classic, with the two men looking hamstrung by the tables stipulation, which they were forced to incorporate into the match all the time.

Eventually Cena was on top and carried Sheamus to the top rope, planning, it seemed, to suplex the Celtic Warrior through the table to end the match.

However, Sheamus countered and pushed Cena backwards through the wood to claim his first world title just six months after being called up to the roster and less than two months into his Raw tenure.

    http://www.irishcentral.com/ent/IrishCentral-exclusive-Sheamus-on-his-WWE-title-win-over-John-Cena-79369527.html
“I told you when we spoke last week that I’d be the new WWE champion, and I was right,” exclaimed the newly crowned Sheamus to the Irish Voice on Tuesday afternoon during a phone interview.

It’s never a good idea to doubt the fighting words of a 6’6” Irishman with boundless ambition, as the former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) champ John Cena discovered to his cost on Sunday night.

Sheamus, a native of Dublin, did exactly what he said he’d do – he slammed Cena through a table to win their “tables” match during the WWE’s pay-per-view Tables, Ladders and Chairs broadcast, and promptly hoisted the ex-champ’s golden championship belt in the air to confirm once and for all that there’s a new superstar on the scene who means business.

The wonderful world of Sheamus got even better 24 hours later on the WWE’s Monday Night Raw show broadcast live on the USA Network when he won a Slammy Award as Breakout Star of the Year, beating other notables such as Scotsman Drew McIntyre and Abraham Washington.

As if they stood a chance against the 31-year-old newly christened champ. The way Sheamus sees it, he’s going to be king of the WWE hill for a long, long time.

“Yeah, I’m cleaning up for the Irish!” he says. “When I came to the WWE I sacrificed an awful lot to get here. I didn’t come here to be a number. I didn’t come here to blend in with the crowd.

“I came here to make a statement, to be the top wrestler in the world. That was the goal, and the goal has been achieved. It’s the start of the New Year as the Celtic Warrior!”

The champ admits that Cena inflicted a beating during their 16-minute Tables match, but Sheamus had no problem coping with the physical pain. The prize at the end was more than worth it.

“I’m pretty beaten up,” Sheamus admitted. “It was pretty crazy. There were a lot of tables used, rafters used. I’m a bit battered but it doesn’t really matter. The fact that I’m the first Irish WWE champion – that overwhelms everything.”

The road ahead will hardly be an easy one for Sheamus now that he’s the man everyone wants to beat. But Sheamus is undefeated since he debuted on the top-rated Raw broadcast only two short months ago. His rise to the top has been meteoric, and he’s ready to take on all comers.

Cena will undoubtedly want a crack at winning his belt back. Sheamus, though, says he’s not worth worrying about.

“He’s got a rematch clause,” Sheamus says. “It’s just a matter of when he wants to use it. I’ve beaten him once and I’ll beat him again.”

Cena was uncharacteristically somber on Monday’s Raw, apologizing to his fans for losing the belt and congratulating Sheamus for the victory. The new Irish champ thinks he’s full of it.

“It was a moving speech, but at the same time it didn’t really move me,” Sheamus says. “Cena underestimated me, he never took me seriously. I’ve been saying that for weeks!

“The thing is, Cena never met anyone like Sheamus, he never met a lunatic Irishman like myself, someone who will fight to the death. He really got his comeuppance!”

Can the villainous Sheamus build up the fan base that the popular Cena has established? The new champ was booed and jeered when he picked up his Slammy Award, but being Mr. Popularity is last on his list of things he wants to accomplish in the WWE.

“I really don’t care,” he says about fan opinion. “The fact is that I’m the WWE champion. I’m the best in the world!”

One aspect of his new reign that Sheamus does care about is projecting his Irish heritage as a strong warrior intent on quashing the put-downs that the Irish have endured in the past.

No more Lucky Charms. “And no more Darby O’Gill and the Little People!” Sheamus says.

“I’m hoping to bring a strong Irish presence to the world through the WWE as well. I want to bring a positive Irish message, and I’m hoping that a lot of Irish Americans who tune in to Raw see a strong representative of the Irish, even if they’ve never been to the home country. If they tune into Raw they’ll see what us real Irish are all about.”

Sheamus, who was born Stephen Farrelly, has plenty of family and friends back home in Dublin who cheered him on against Cena, and he says the feedback he’s received has been incredible.

“My family stayed up until 3 a.m. watching the show,” Sheamus says. “They are in their element. I’m getting response from people I haven’t heard from in years.”
Everyone wants to hang with a champ, and no doubt Sheamus will be mobbed when the day comes for an Irish return. He’s hoping that will be sooner rather than later, and that he’ll headline a WWE show in Dublin as the top star.
That’s not far fetched, as the WWE travels to Ireland every year and regularly sells out its shows. “We go to Dublin a lot, and I guarantee you I will walk in there as champion,” Sheamus promises. “Not one man can touch me.”
There is one group of warriors who Sheamus has the utmost respect for, though – the U.S. troops who are representing their country on the battlefields in Iraq and Afghanistan.
For the past seven years WWE superstars have traveled to visit the troops on the front lines, and the annual broadcasts of the performances have always drawn big ratings. This year’s holiday show will be broadcast on NBC on Saturday, December 19 at 9 p.m., and Sheamus for one will be tuned in.
“It’s a big show on NBC,” he says. “I have a lot of respect for the troops. I know there are a lot of Irish Americans who go to war and I’ve met a lot of them. To put your life on hold to go and serve your country, well, no matter what, you’ve got to have a lot of respect for that.”
Christmas has come early for Sheamus, and the New Year’s resolution is for more of the same success.
“I’ve brought the bacon home,” he says. “I’m always hungry and I won’t get complacent. John Cena, Triple H, Shawn Michaels..... they’re all secondary to me now. I’m going to rule the WWE for a long time!”

But they specifically mentioned Britain and Ireland as separate. In fairness to the British media they generally wish us the best in sport etc. The support over the Henry thing was overwhelming from across the water.

No exaggeration, i haven't been this happy for a guy to take the belt since Eddie beat Brock for the title. Sheamus has all the tools to be a massive superstar for years to come in WWE. And at long last, the Irish aren't shown as being Guinness swilling fools. (F*cking Lucky Charms too)

Ok, so I marked out a bit more because of his finisher (basically Scott Hall's), but you have to admit that it is awesome that he still has the title.

I was expecting a couple of weeks before Super Cena roared, did his Super Cena finish and super squashed his opponent. Thankfully this didnt happen.

What I see is Vince doing what he did at the start of the attitude era.
TNA are doing what WCW did and hiring the over the hill wrestlers. Ring any bells?
Vince won the Monday night wars because he took charge and didn't allow the egos to run the show.

    That's another thread though.

To quote myself from a different forum:
    Ridley wrote:
I don't hate him, I just find his main event status incredibly underwhelming. I felt the same when Lashley was facing Cena for the title.

Sheamus appears on Raw and beats some jobbers the audience doesn't care about, he retires Jamie Noble who barely appeared on the show and known for losing all while everyone is being told what a monster/warrior the guy is.

He assaults Lawler (and a timekeeper), and Lawler is back the next week fine. He quickly puts away Finlay (who loves to fight but didn't) at Survivor Series. And wins the match for Team Miz. That part's fine (except the cruicifix powerbomb I don't like).

The next night he wins the number 1 contender battle royal and moans about wanting to be taken seriously by Cena and put him through a table then avoids him until TLC.

At TLC he wins by Cena accidentally falling off the turnbuckle through the table or something. The next night, on a three hour Raw this monster champion wins newcomer of the year "I'm not a footnote HONESTLY. I'm a champion(, fella). Yay! Note: not a footnote cheesy.gif" Then he's all smiley happy when Cena wins at the end of the show and... doesn't do anything all. Sheamus, the brand new record setting champion was on that show for, what? Sevenish minutes?

Right now the champ is still Cena, he just isn't holding the belt.

Things have slightly improved since I wrote that on Dec 17, 2009, 12:16pm but not much.

I want that guy as champion
(without the axe obviously). And crucifix powerbombs are lame no matter the spelling. ;)
