I know this is an outside chance but does anyone know how to get between these two cities. they are only 100 miles apart but i am struggling to find a way. There use to be a direct train twice a day but as far as I can see it has been cancellend. Any help would be appreciated.

According to bahn.de, there is a direct EuroNightLine connection leaving Ljubljana at 2:28am and arriving into Venezia Santa Lucia at 7:16am. The return journey leaves Ljubljana at 9:20pm and gets into Venezia Santa Lucia at 4:20am.

It is surprisingly slow alright - but at least you can sleep on the train and do not have to change midway.

What time of year are you going? Some of the international trains from Ljubljana are summer only.

You can get a direct bus. I got one last July from Venice to Ljubljana. It goes during the day so it is better than the train if you want to avoid travelling at night. Reasonably priced as well. Their website is: www.drd.si
It brings you to Venice Train station. I would advise reserving a seat. Best of luck.

I'd hazard a guess that there will be more than one train daily during the summer; I'll see if I can root out my few-years-old European rail timetable at home, which will give some indication. You could also do what we did: train from Ljubljana to Pula (Croatia) and catamaran from Pula to Venice!

On bahn.de, there is only that one direct train even in July. Certainly, more trains could be added between now and then - but train companies tend to be rather organized. If there were more trains in the summer, chances are, they would have planned that already and put it into the timetable.

Must be the case so! Can't find the book anyway.... Are there more trains to Trieste maybe - with onward connections to Venice?

That train service goes in winter also. I have been to Ljubljana 4 times, always fly to Venice and get the train.

Its slow, and stops for one hour at the Italian-Slovene border.

It costs about 25 euro Venice to Ljubljana, and 20 euro the other way.

i took the venice to budapest train two days ago. I got on the train (in venice) that had just come from budapest. If It wasnt late (which it was by 6hrs for me :() then it should arrive in venice around 9.
    The train stops in Ljubljana.
It only goes once a day afaik.
Cost 33euro from venice to the border of slovenia/croatia
p.s. slovenian customs are jerks though
